The Technical Coordinator provides technical support for events in the UTC Arena.

Primary Responsibilities:
  • Ensures that all technical rider questions (power requirements, sound requirements, stage location), and installation of phone, fax, and high-speed internet questions are resolved in advance where possible
  • Responsible for the supervision, scheduling, and coordination of house crew, including members of stagehands from the local union
  • Responsible for setting up the arena in proper/requested configuration by pulling or pushing in certain risers according to ticket sales or manifest
  • Responsible for assisting with the setup and removal of the basketball floor, installation of scorer's table, radio circuits, shot clocks, computers, clock operation, lighting, sound, and basketball goals for athletic events
  • Advances technical issues prior to show personnel arriving at venue
  • Understands and explains power availability to show promoter regarding technical rider requirements
  • In conjunction with show promoter, determines the number of men, time, and material required to stage various events and schedules same
  • Coordinates and plans the needs of the various events scheduled in the arena via emails, phone calls, faxes, meetings, reading of riders, and helps resolve all on-site issues with the production personnel on event day
  • Performs technical, electrical, and communication support for events
  • Communicates with technical representatives of incoming events to determine the placement of television trucks for televised basketball games, running of cables to those trucks that meet risk management and facility requirements
  • Works with promoter on power requirements and hookups for events
  • Supervises the work of group stagehands, electricians, and carpenters
  • Responsible for the setting up and tearing down of events such as:
  • Removal of the basketball floor in preparation of a concert, or installing the basketball floor after a concert, moving risers in or out depending upon the configuration for the next event, setting up the sound system based on the needs of the next event, installing the scorers' tables, press tables, and building or removing stages
  • Serves as chief operator of the facility's sound system and other electrical equipment
  • Recommends new purchases or needs based upon existing equipment, repairing cables, orders parts for basketball floor, riser seats, motors, and relays for the scoreboard
  • Responsible for sound at various locations on campus such as graduation, convocations, Chancellor's meetings and/or congressional meetings


The ideal candidate will possess the following:
  • Knowledge of sound systems, lighting systems, and communication patching
  • Knowledge of the facility's electrical power systems and capacities
  • Ability to understand theatrical language and stage cues
  • Working knowledge of spotlight repair
  • Ability to read and understand a wiring diagram
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, the public, and event performance directors
  • Must possess the ability to distinguish colors


Must be able to work nights, weekends, and holidays; the job requires long and irregular hours.

Minimum Qualifications: Typically requires a high school diploma and two years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. A valid journeymen electrical license is required.

Preferred Qualifications: Vocational or technical degree and 5 years of experience are preferred.
