Job Description Summary
Perform all responsibilities of a senior anesthesia veterinary technician as necessary, and in addition to these, must independently lead anesthetic support for high risk/critical patients of all species. Act as point person for coordinating ULAR-anesthetic support efforts for new protocols involving USDA-covered species, including participation in discussions with labs about selecting appropriate anesthetic protocols for their specific studies. Assist the clinical management team with quality assurance checks to assure accurate surgical billing. Provide training to both ULAR team members and investigators in skills related to the provision of anesthesia.

Job Responsibilities

1 Independently provide anesthesia (including IVC placement, intubation, evaluation of anesthetic depth, medication administration, use of physiologic monitoring, recordkeeping) and lead anesthetic support for high
risk/critical patients of all species. Ability to react quickly, independently, and calmly to stressful situations involving patient care. 30%
2 Utilize extensive knowledge and experience with a wide variety of commonly used veterinary anesthetic drugs and anesthetic techniques (ex: gas anesthesia, TIVA, local anesthetics, analgesia). Assist investigators with aseptic technique to assure sterile conditions during surgical procedures. 15%
3 Act as point person for coordinating ULAR-anesthetic support efforts for new protocols involving USDA-covered species, including participation in discussions with labs about selecting appropriate anesthetic protocols for their specific studies. Assist the clinical management team with quality assurance checks to assure accurate surgical billing. 4 Independently manage tasks related to the provision of veterinary clinical
care/treatments to all rodent and non-rodent species including triage, injectable, oral, topical medication administration, diagnostic sample collection, and euthanasia. 15%
5 Communicate with clinical veterinary staff and lab personnel regarding the health of colony animals. Maintain animal health records, perform drug calculations. Consult with veterinary clinical staff and investigator staff on clinical treatment options. 10%
6 Provide emergency and critical care treatments to animals in surgical recovery/ICU. Independently lead performance of colony maintenance tasks for USDA species. 10%
7 Other duties as assigned 5%

Qualifications

The individual must have a minimum of 3-5 years of veterinary technician experience; AALAS certification at an LATG level and 3 years of direct anesthesia experience is required.
