Postdoctoral Research Associate, Marine & Environmental Sciences

About the Opportunity

Job Summary

We are seeking a postdoctoral scientist to join the Bowen Lab in the Department of Marine and Environmental Science at Northeastern University. This Simons Foundation funded project focuses on understanding the role that hydrology plays in structuring microbial communities and their associated ecosystem function with an emphasis on the role that microbes play in carbon cycling process and carbon storage. Much of our effort will be in metagenomic and metatranscriptomic analysis of microbial communities, with an emphasis on microbial interactions that promote the decomposition or stabilization of carbon in coastal wetlands. The project involves a dynamic team of biogeochemists, hydrologists, plant physiologists, and ecosystem ecologists, including a cohort of postdocs, graduate students, and technicians working on different elements of the project. The work will take place at field sites in the Plum Island Ecosystem Long-Term Ecological Research site and will be based at Northeastern's Marine Science Center in Nahant, MA, though partial remote work is possible.

Key Responsibilities

1. Computational analysis of microbial communities associated with several different experiments focused on understanding microbial interactions and carbon processing, including figure and manuscript preparation and publishing

2. Experimental design, implementation, and sample processing in association with other team personnel

3. Training and mentorship of interns and graduate students affiliated with the proposed research efforts

Qualifications

The candidate must have completed their PhD at the start of this postdoctoral work and have at least some portion of their dissertation in the publication pipeline. Microbial bioinformatics experience is essential including both short read analysis and the construction and analysis of genomes derived from metagenomic data (MAGs). Experience working with metatranscriptomic data is a plus. The ideal candidate will have experience thinking about microbial systems through the lens of microbial biogeochemistry and or microbial interactions and metabolic networks. The opportunity exists to expand this research in multiple associated directions.
