Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
Provide a comfortable safe environment for students and staff as economically as possible through repair, and preventative maintenance of building heating, ventilation, cooling, mechanical, plumbing and life safety systems.

  • When on shift, complete rounds of mechanical spaces recording operating conditions, and checking for any problems.
  • Respond to service calls from building occupants analyzing problems and making appropriate repairs.
  • Repair and maintain heating equipment including boilers, steam distribution systems, hydronic heating systems, furnaces, feed pumps, valves, pressure reducing valves, steam traps, and condensate pumps.
  • Repair and maintain cooling equipment including centrifugal and reciprocating water chillers up to 1,800 tons, associated pumps, cooling towers, and chilled water systems.
  • Repair and maintain ventilation systems, including fans, motors, filters, dampers, ductwork, and variable air volume boxes.
  • Repair and maintain various types of mechanical equipment including pumps, air compressors, condensers, food service equipment and plumbing systems.
  • Repair and maintain plumbing systems, including fixtures, supply piping, waste piping, and pumps.
  • In conjunction with Engineers, College Police Department, and the Hazardous Materials Coordinator, respond to emergency situations.
  • Interact with building occupants, college personnel, and contractors, to resolve environmental problems, perform repairs, and provide assistance with projects.
  • Maintain life safety equipment such as fire sprinklers, fire alarms, fire extinguishers, halon fire suppression systems, emergency lighting, emergency generators, eyewash, and emergency shower systems.
  • Maintain indoor lighting including changing lamps and replacing ballasts.
  • Maintain clean and safe work spaces.
  • Other related duties as assigned.


  • Qualifications:

    • Education
      • High School Diploma and some vocational training in a related field required.
      • EPA Universal Refrigerant Technician Certification or the ability to obtain one within 180 calendar days required.
      • Same as above and an Associate's Degree in HVAC, building operation, or related field preferred.
      • Chicago Stationary Engineers License preferred.
    • Experience
      • Two (2) years experience and maintaining all types of power plant and building mechanical equipment or equivalent in combination of education and experience required.
      • Five (5) years of the above preferred.
    • COD Training
      • Bloodborne Pathogens
      • Hazardous Communications
      • Forklift /Scissor /Aerial Lift
      • Arc Flash


    Working Conditions:

  • Hand and power tools, sewer rodders, electrical meters, air balancing equipment, and refrigeration gauges.
  • Generally Good, but can be exposed to dirty environments, fire, steam leaks, gas leaks, electrical hazards, harsh weather, and long hours in emergency situations.
  • Must be able to work at heights and in confined spaces.
  • The job requires extensive walking, and the ability to climb stairs and ladders.
  • Some lifting, occasionally heavy.
  • Rotating shift work, and emergency overtime are required.
  • Must pass physical exam at College expense.
  • This position requires a background check, physical and drug screen.
