Job Summary

Oversee laboratory activities within engineering courses and laboratories. Work with faculty to develop new or enhanced laboratory activities based on curricula. Facilitate student / faculty projects and experiments as related to course assignments. Work with faculty and the director to plan, specify, equip, and maintain teaching laboratory and research resources within the engineering program

Essential Functions

Direct Course Support (60%)

Oversight of laboratory activities, including: routine setup, breakdown and maintenance of lab stations. Support faculty during courses and laboratories. Train students on equipment, teach technical skills, and assist with experiment design and instrumentation, as related to assigned projects. Work with faculty to develop new or enhanced laboratory activities by researching ideas, fabricating and assessing lab apparatus/procedures, reviewing/writing handouts, and sourcing instrumentation. Responsible for formal safety practices in the teaching labs. Supervise student employees during the semester primarily for support of teaching labs and during the summer for special projects.

Maintenance and Support of Equipment, Materials, and Space (30%)

Maintain and calibrate lab equipment and inventories. Primary oversight and receive formal training on complex equipment. Purchase materials, course supplies, tools and equipment for teaching and general use. Work with faculty to create materials & instrumentation kits for specific labs. Organize equipment and storage in all engineering spaces. Identify and create activity areas (e.g., concrete, lasercutting, 3D printing, materials testing, geotech, basic studio tools) within the engineering labs. Represent the engineering department on the Equipment Committee. Assist director with setting course budgets. Track course and equipment expenses during the semester. Maintain engineering-owned computer equipment and work with CATS to ensure engineering computers are current and functional. Liaison to facilities regarding the condition of the teaching labs (and research labs when desired). Liaison to CATS regarding software support for EGR teaching computers. Liaison for engineering and CATS plotters. Serve as a link between faculty, to identify equipment and space needs, and help facilitate common laboratory-related goals.

Support Educational Outreach (10%)

Responsible for department oversight to the student SWE chapter's "Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day" activities. Organize or assist with engineering-themed STEM outreach, via Community Collaborations' Science Outreach Coordinator or independently for the department.

Minimum Qualifications (knowledge, skills, education, experience, certifications, licenses)

B.S. degree in engineering, with a demonstrated hands-on capability and 3 - 5 years of experience or an equivalent combination of education/experience.

Experience working with individuals from diverse backgrounds.

Preferred Qualifications

MS in Engineering

The ability to effectively and efficiently develop and execute several key projects simultaneously. Must be able to work independently; strong organizational, writing, and oral communication skills, excellent interpersonal skills, and the ability to effectively interact with people of diverse backgrounds. Ability to design experiments and hands-on demonstrations, maintain and repair equipment and tools.
