Job Summary: The Math0920 Foundations for Math Success team at SLCC is hiring Lab Aides!Were looking for mentors, who are also talented learners interested in creating quality learning experiences for developmental math students.A Lab Aides day may look different from week to week. You can expect to regularly attend Math0920 classes to help answer student questions, support active learning, and encourage student engagement. You may also help instructors provide a productive learning environment that will guide students toward understanding the course material. Also, you will assist students in learning study skills that will help them excel both inside and outside of the classroom. Hours may vary from semester to semester depending on Lab Aide availability. Below are our normally scheduled hours.Spring & Fall Semester HoursMonday & Wednesday 10:00am - 12:50pmTuesday & Thursday 11:30am - 2:20pmTuesday & Thursday 5:30pm - 8:20pmSummer Semester HoursTuesday, Wednesday, Thursday 9:00am - 11:30amTuesday, Wednesday, Thursday 5:30pm - 8:00pm

Essential Responsibilities and Duties:
  • Provide quality learning assistance to students enrolled in Math0920: Foundations for Mathematical Success.
  • Attend classes with students and rotate through different class sessions to establish connection/bonding with the instructors and the students.
  • Assist instructors ensure that students are remaining engaged and absorbing material.
  • Provide feedback to students using positive reinforcement techniques to encourage, motivate, and build confidence in students.
  • Provide support for content and concept understanding, not direct answers to graded work.
  • Work with students in groups.
  • Provide support and structure in project-based assignments.
  • Help students work with math manipulatives that model math concepts.
  • Teach students study skills, note-taking techniques and test-taking strategies.
  • Participate in training, development opportunities and other events when available.
  • Maintain regular communication with your supervisor and other Lab Aides.


Essential Responsibilities and Duties Continued:

Minimum Qualifications: High School Diploma.



Preferred Qualifications: Successful completion of MATH 1050-College Algebra (or equivalent).

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: The desire to mentor students and help them learn how to learn in a college setting.Listen to and answer questions during interactions with students.Communicate subject matter effectively.Help students learn how to learn.Help students develop or refine their study skills and become independent learners.Work well with others and in a team environmentDemonstrate sensitivity to, respect for, and understanding of the needs of students seeking learning support.Great time management, self-motivation, and organizational skills.Follow written and oral instructions.Knowledge of Mathematics through College Algebra.Ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of diverse people, ability, culture, ethnic background, to maintain good working relationships across the College. Ability to work with all groups in a diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic background of community college students, faculty and staff, including those with disabilities.
