In compliance with SB 1162, Western University of Health Sciences is providing a pay scale for this position. The pay scale reflects the minimum and maximum target for new hire salaries for this position. Within this range, the individual pay is determined by a variety of factors, including but not limited to job-related skills, experience, relevant education or training, and work location. Please note that the compensation details listed reflects the base salary only.

Job Summary
We are looking for a dedicated and passionate individual to join our team as a Health Career Ladder (HCL) Academic Coach with a focus on Curriculum Development. In collaboration with another HCL Academic Coach, you will play a key role in creating an engaging curriculum for the Saturday Academy Youth Program, specifically targeting students in PreK through 5th grade. Your responsibilities will include developing lessons following the 5Es teaching model, incorporating crosscutting concepts, and providing curriculum coaching sessions to guide WesternU student doctors in aligning their activities with curriculum goals.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  1. Curriculum Development: Demonstrated knowledge and experience in designing educational curriculum, particularly for early childhood education.
  2. Educational Models: Familiarity with the 5Es teaching model and its application in creating engaging and effective lesson plans.
  3. Science Education: Understanding of crosscutting concepts in science education, including cause and effect, data analysis, explanation construction, and the use of models.
  4. Health Sciences: Basic knowledge of health sciences to ensure hands-on activities are relevant and engaging for students.
  5. Pedagogical Strategies: Knowledge of effective teaching strategies, with an emphasis on interactive and inquiry-based methods.
  6. Collaboration: Ability to collaborate with other educators and stakeholders to create a cohesive and integrated curriculum.
  7. Coaching: Skill in coaching and guiding student doctors in developing health sciences-related activities, fostering a supportive learning environment.
  8. Adaptability: Flexibility to adjust lesson plans and coaching strategies based on student needs and feedback.
  9. Cultural Competence: Ability to work with a diverse group of students, understanding and respecting various cultural perspectives.





Required Qualifications
  • Bachelors degree in education, science, or a related field; Masters degree preferred.
  • Proven experience in curriculum development, with a focus on early childhood education.
  • Familiarity with the 5Es teaching model and crosscutting concepts in science education.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills.
  • Previous experience working with diverse student populations is a plus.

Curriculum Development: With guidance form the Director of Health Career Ladder, you will be expected to develop 6 lessons for the Health Career Ladder Saturday Academy Youth Program, focusing on students from PreK through 5th grade. Ensure lessons actively engage students using the 5Es teaching model (Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, Evaluate) while also incorporating crosscutting concepts shared by the Director of Health Career Ladder.

*Please note that the content created for the lessons does not have to be exclusively focused on health sciences, but the hands-on activities should relate to health sciences. It is essential to limit curriculum planning to a maximum of one hour. This time restriction ensures that other components of our programming can effectively complement and enhance the overall learning experience.

Offer a minimum of 6 curriculum coaching sessions (one per Saturday Academy Session) to WesternU student doctors, guiding them in the development of their health sciences-related activities and assisting in identifying connections between their activities and the language of the 5Es and crosscutting concepts.

Attend at least 2 academies each semester, totaling 4 academies over the course of this contract. The specific academy dates are subject to flexibility, pending team approval, but are anticipated to occur in September, October, January, and February.
