Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost


Wright State University invites nominations for and applications from individuals interested in assuming an exciting leadership opportunity as Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost. Wright State University seeks an individual of significant scholarly accomplishment, with the experience, leadership, breadth of vision, and zeal to serve as the Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost of a metropolitan, research university. This position reports to the University President and is responsible for overseeing and guiding the university's academic schools/colleges, nationally recognized research and creative activities, and academic support services.

Wright State University, located 12 miles northeast of downtown Dayton, Ohio, annually serves over 19,000 unique students and offers more than 230 undergraduate, graduate, doctoral, and professional degree programs through eight colleges and three schools. The university also operates a regional campus, Wright State University–Lake Campus, on the shores of Grand Lake St. Mary's in Celina, Ohio. Wright State University was named to honor aviation pioneers Orville and Wilbur Wright, who invented the world's first successful airplane in their Dayton bicycle shop. In fact, the Wright brothers conducted most of their early test flights at Huffman Prairie, just minutes from the Dayton campus. Wright State University takes pride in its beautiful 557-acre campus, which includes lush forests and a biology preserve. The university's state-of-the-art facilities include 71 academic and support buildings, 33 student residential buildings, and a world-class entertainment and athletics venue. Underground tunnels connect 20 of 22 buildings in the academic section of the Dayton campus, shielding students and employees from any adverse weather and adding to the university's national reputation for accessibility for those with disabilities.

The Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost has direct line authority over college/school/campus Deans, Vice President for Research, Vice President for Enrollment Management, Vice President for Student Affairs, and Chief Information Officer. This position oversees other areas such as the Offices of Academic Affairs, Faculty and Staff Affairs, Libraries, Student Success, and International Education. This position is responsible for the recruitment, hiring, and review of Deans, while ensuring that they successfully implement programs to achieve the university's academic, research and engagement priorities. Likewise, the Provost must ensure that the functions of academic affairs, student life, the research enterprise, the graduate school, and enrollment management are delivered robustly, with a focus on student success and optimal use of resources. The Provost will develop university wide academic goals, strategies, and educational activities for implementation, including program planning, policy analysis, planning for diversity and inclusion, faculty development, international education and engagement, student affairs, and instructional technology.

Requirements:

The Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost is required to have an earned doctorate (or terminal degree appropriate to their discipline) from an accredited institution with a record of professional accomplishments that meet the qualifications for appointment to the rank of Professor at Wright State University. The Provost is required to have a career history which provides progressive evidence of a deep understanding of factors impacting metropolitan research universities.

The Provost is required to have a reputation for integrity, transparency, objectivity, and strong ethical practice; the ability to serve as a spokesperson for the university; financial acumen; strategic thinking and long-range vision; excellent leadership skills; and a track record of commitment to inclusion and to building diverse and responsibly empowered leadership teams.

Desired qualities:

A strong candidate will have a career history which already demonstrates their ability to equitably and rigorously uphold quality standards and earn the respect and trust of individuals within and outside the university. A strong candidate will be able to demonstrate evidence of commitment to academic quality; strong influencing, coaching and relationship management skills; collaborative and interpersonal skills in teaming with colleagues and partners; and a record of success in securing grants, fundraising, and interacting with major donors. An appreciation for the higher education landscape including the roles of a research university, a regional campus, professional schools, and the role that these institutions play in community transformation and economic development is also strongly desired.
