Job Description

The Email Marketing Manager is a key member of a high-performing marketing department whose mission is to keep Boston College alumni, parents, and friends engaged and participating with the university. This individual reports to the Senior Associate Director, Digital Technology & Operations, and collaborates closely with project managers and internal partners to deliver engaging digital content to key constituents utilizing email, web pages, mobile technology, and social media.

As the manager of University Advancement's broadcast emails, this person is tasked with designing, building, and sending a large volume of emails on behalf of our partners. They will develop sophisticated emails with complex external variable data to serve diverse segments and a variety of initiatives. In close collaboration with colleagues in Advancement Communications and Marketing and other departments in Advancement, they will help inform and build the email strategy to reach our broadest audience with the most impactful emails to increase conversion. This person will be tasked with assuring the quality of the content, as well as the functionality across different platforms. This person will also be tasked with managing the policies and processes that guide the broadcast of marketing emails, as well as maintaining the master calendar. Aside from making sure processes run smoothly, the Senior Email Marketing Manager will be the resident email marketing expert charged with making recommendations related to email development and performance with the goal of increasing effectiveness and performance.

Building upon this person's success managing broadcast emails, this person may also be asked to assist with building and maintaining website and social media content. This person will also be asked to help the department leverage the full range of digital channels, including our website, blogs, social channels, and mobile, in order to reduce the volume of emails currently being sent.

Essential Functions:
  • Work with Salesforce Marketing Cloud to build sophisticated email campaigns, leveraging Amp Script and external data.
  • Design, build, and send outbound broadcast emails on behalf of the University Advancement Division to Boston College alumni, parents, and friends;
  • Manage the University Advancement Broadcast Email calendar.
  • Manage Advancement Marketing and Communications' quality testing process for broadcast emails; and assume responsibility for assuring that all broadcast emails are free of error, work across all platforms, and adhere to current SPAM filter standards
  • Manage and enforce the divisions' broadcast email policy; proactively collect content, data, and scheduling details from clients and stakeholders
  • Develop and manage the department's process for testing broadcast emails in order to increase effectiveness and raise key performance indicators (open rates, click-thrus, etc.)
  • Leverage the divisions' website and social media channels into order to transition digital content from static emails to dynamic and interactive digital media.
  • Measure and report performance of broadcast emails and digital content for the department, and make recommendations to the team based on these measurements
  • Develop an expertise of digital marketing industry trends and best practices, and make recommendations to the rest of the team based on this expertise
  • Make recommendations on email-related tools and technologies adopted by the University to determine if and how they can best be leveraged;
  • This position will also supervise, train, and develop a junior-level email developer.

Full-Time Equivalent Hiring Range: $63,900 to $79,850; salary commensurate with relevant experience.

Requirements

  • Advanced knowledge of Salesforce Marketing Cloud, with a focus on Email Studio.
  • Advanced knowledge of Salesforce Marketing Cloud Amp Scripting, leveraging external data to produce highly personalized emails.
  • Experience working with SQL, specifically as it applies to Salesforce Marketing Cloud Automation Studio.
  • A robust understanding of Marketing Cloud's contact data model.
  • Experience working with all Marketing Cloud Builders and Studios, including Mobile Connect and Personalization Builder for Emails
  • Extensive experience utilizing Journey Builder with thorough understanding of Audience Builder configuration.
  • A bachelor's degree plus a minimum of 5 years of demonstrated experience in building emails, web pages, e- newsletters, online forms, mobile and social media content, and other features.
  • Knowledge of HTML, CSS, Adobe web tools (Photoshop and Dreamweaver), and experience working within a content management system.
  • An expert-level grasp of email marketing, digital content, mobile marketing, and social media strategy.
  • Experience testing emails and web content for both performance and functionality across all platforms.
  • Familiarity with email metrics and reporting, as well as with Google Analytics.
  • Solid writing skills with ability to design web graphics, optimize photos, and troubleshoot html, css, and browser display issues.
  • Excellent interpersonal communications skills
  • Certified in Salesforce Marketing Cloud Developer and/or Marketing Cloud Consultant is preferred, but not required.
  • Some management or supervisory experience is a plus.
