The Department of Music in the College of Arts & Humanities at California State University, Fresno seeks applicants for a tenure-track, academic-year position as Assistant Professor of Music and Director of Jazz Studies. The successful candidate will teach undergraduate and graduate students, conduct scholarly and creative research, and engage in service-related activities; as well as coordinate all aspects of the jazz studies program; direct the premier jazz ensemble and jazz combos; teach courses in improvisation and teach additional courses as needed by the department within the candidate's area of expertise. Active recruitment is expected, which can include activities such as taking tours, hosting festivals, serving as adjudicator/clinician/guest conductor/guest soloist and performing at conferences. The successful candidate is expected to maintain a positive relationship with music educators in the region, including active participation in local, regional, state, and national music organizations. Typical workload is 15 weighted teaching units (WTUs) per semester, generally comprising 12 WTUs of instruction and 3 WTUs of non-instructional responsibilities. Outcomes and assessments and service-learning are important components of the university curriculum. The successful candidate will be expected to work collaboratively with faculty and staff.

The Department of Music at Fresno State was one of the original departments when the university was founded in 1911, and continues to be a leader in music education and artistic performance in the Central Valley and the state at large. The Department of Music has a performance schedule of over 150 performances a year that includes landmark symphonic and choral works, operas, festivals and master classes. The Department of Music provides undergraduate and graduate instruction in music for those planning for professional careers as music educators, performers, composers, conductors, and studio teachers, as well as those preparing for advanced degrees.

Required Education: An earned Master's degree in Music from an accredited institution (or equivalent) is required. Significant professional experience may be considered in lieu of an earned doctorate degree.

Required Experience:
1. An active, accomplished professional jazz artist with demonstrable expertise and experience as a soloist and ensemble member.
2. Demonstrable fluency in a variety of jazz styles.
3. Ability to demonstrate a commitment to working effectively with faculty, staff, and students from diverse ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
4. Demonstrated organizational and communication skills necessary to coordinate a jazz program and excel in an academic setting.
5. Demonstrable success leading a jazz group for a minimum of 3 years.

Preferred Qualifications:
1. An earned doctorate in Music.
2. A well-articulated agenda for research, scholarship, and creative activity in a jazz related field.
3. Demonstrable success teaching jazz at the college level and/or in the secondary schools for a minimum of 3 years.

Active participation in local, regional, state, national, and/or international music organizations such as, but not limited to, NAfME and Jazz Education Network (JEN).

Desired Qualifications:
1.Demonstrable experience in Latin (Afro-Cuban) Jazz.
2.Demonstrable experience in Contemporary improvised musics.
3.Demonstrable experience in jazz composition.
4.Demonstrable experience in recording and technology.
