Supervisor, Fields

Reporting to the Associate Director, Athletic Facilities Maintenance, the Supervisor, Fields supervises and participates in the upkeep and maintenance of all BC outdoor athletic facilities. This position will be involved with staff assignment scheduling, budgeting, project planning and forecasting, event coverage, snow removal / storm coverage, set-up and breakdown, purchasing and inventorying of product and equipment. The Supervisor will consult on capital construction projects and capital renewal projects.

Athletic Maintenance is a division of the University's Facilities Services Department. Alumni Stadium, Fish Field House, natural grass practice fields, Newton Athletic Complex (soccer / lacrosse field and Field Hockey Field) , Harrington Athletic Village (baseball field, softball field and Frates Center) and adjacent landscaped areas fall under the care of Athletic Maintenance.

The main focus and function of this role to provide quality control of daily staff tasks and assignments, providing a clean and safe playing surface for the student athletes and visitors. Communicate and execute the needs and expectations of the Athletic Department, the Facilities Services mission and greater needs of campus life.

Boston College hosts many athletic and university events. Many of the events are televised. This position will be asked to triage issues and problems that arise before, during and after these events. Athletics is a fast paced environment, both patron safety and fan experience is paramount. Many times decisions will have to be made pertaining to: fan and or student athlete safety, equipment failure or malfunction and staffing issues. Multitasking, problem solving and strong mechanical skills will be required.
The position will have working knowledge and will participate and manage the execution of : Landscaping, Turfgrass management, irrigation systems and controls, maintenance of turf and related equipment, construction, maintenance and upkeep of the facilities including but not limited to the Bubble (Alumni Stadiums's air supported structure) during the winter months, maintaining, transporting and construction of athletic equipment, storage upkeep and organization, material / application logging and tracking. Event preparation and clean-up are integral to this role.

This role will assist in the preparation and management of over 120 athletic and university events including: home games and practices of 8 varsity sports, club and intramural events, Commencement and university functions. The Supervisor will work with and communicate with a variety of university constituents including: the Athletics Department, BC Trades and Custodial staff, Landscape Services, Event Management, Capital Projects and contracted services.

This position will supervise approximately 6 full-time union Athletic Maintenance staff, teams of supplemental university staff, BC trades and Custodial staff on certain tasks, outside contractors and student labor staff.

Tracking of annual operational budgets and consulting and or managing certain capital renewal projects will be part of the Supervisor's responsibility. Many maintenance and capital improvement projects are planned, funded and managed jointly with athletic maintenance and the athletics department.
The annual operating budget funds Equipment repair/PM, contracted services, products, supplies and tools related to the upkeep of the outdoor athletic facilities.

S/he will assist in the hiring, supervision, payroll and training of full time and student staff.

S/he will be asked to work together with the Associate Director, Athletic Facilities Maintenance to schedule weekly work and event coverage. This will include some holidays, nights and weekend shifts as dictated by the Athletics and event schedules. Every effort will be made to make coverage of project work, events and storm coverage as equitable as possible. Ability to sometimes work a very demanding schedule including nights, weekends, holidays, double shifts in all weather conditions.

The Supervisor will be asked to work in extreme hot and cold conditions. S/he will be exposed to the elements including: snow, ice and rain. The Supervisor will be expected to lift 50lbs or more repeatedly over long distances, and to operate and move heavy equipment.


Full-Time Equivalent Hiring Range: $65,750 to $82,200; salary commensurate with relevant experience.

Requirements

Requirements:

MINIMUM:

  • Associate's degree in Turfgrass Management or related field
  • Must maintain a valid driver's license
  • Proven supervisory skills with the ability to coach, mentor and motivate a diverse workforce
  • Excellent verbal, written and public relations skills
  • Three years of relative experience maintaining high quality low cut natural grass and synthetic athletic fields
  • Ability and experience in NCAA athletic field marking and painting
  • Proven experience maintaining clay infield diamond surfaces
  • Apply knowledge and management of quality natural grass surfaces
  • Working knowledge of reel mowers, and associated turfgrass equipment
  • Working knowledge of irrigation systems and repair
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel and Google Docs
  • Experience in maintenance and repair of synthetic infill turf surfaces
  • Strong mechanical skills and machinery trouble shooting troubleshooting

    PREFERRED:
  • Experience in maintaining Athletic Stadiums and playing surfaces
  • Proven ability to manage and participate in multiple projects and multiple crews in a productive and safe manner
  • Knowledge and previous experience working with NCAA Division 1 Football, Baseball, Softball, Lacrosse, Field Hockey, Tennis, Soccer, Rugby
  • Experience and knowledge of installation and maintenance air supported structures
  • Knowledge of Federal OSHA and Massachusetts Department of Labor Standards
  • Working knowledge of tools and equipment related to managing a multi-purpose sports and entertainment facility including lighting systems and irrigation systems.
  • Massachusetts Hoisting license
  • Massachusetts Commercial Pesticide Applicators License
