The Associate Director will serve as the internal leadership of the development of the Disability Resource Center. Ensuring compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act - Amendments Act and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, the position will work in conjunction with the Executive Director to lead the DRC team in promoting access for qualified students, staff and faculty, and the public with disabilities to guarantee equal access to services, programs, and activities at UTC. The Associate Director will be responsible for supervising a team that makes the determination of disability status and effective provision of necessary accommodations for students with disabilities. The Associate Director will be responsible for the development and implementation of intensive training and education within the DRC staff to improve staff competencies within the areas of disability legislation, trends within higher education and disability, disability culture, and access. The position will work to implement faculty and staff trainings to encourage access throughout academic programs, student programs, physical accessibility, and access to auxiliary services.

The Associate Director will serve as the primary contact for all housing related disability requests, meal plan modification and will serve as the primary liaison between students and staff regarding Title IX and the intersection with disability. The position will supervise all DRC coordinators, interns, the administrative assistant, student workers, and any volunteers. The Associate Director will collaborate with student organizations to increase access and inclusion for individuals with disabilities in programs, events, and physical spaces on campus. The position will be responsible for all day-to-day department functions and manage schedules, budgeting, administration, supervision, etc., and will lead department meetings and training. In addition, the Associate Director will make recommendations to the Executive Director regarding supervision decisions including hiring, disciplining, pay structures and changes for all staff of the Disability Resource Center. Finally, the Associate Director will engage in campus collaboration by serving on committees, advisory boards, and through the creation and maintenance of intentional professional partnerships elevating disability access to an institutional conversation and commitment.

Duties and Responsibilities

Recruit, train, develop and supervise Disability Resource Center staff to ensure competent and committed staff to fully support students with disabilities - this will include researching and educating staff on relevant disability legislation, case law, federal and state legal changes, and trends related to serving students with disabilities in higher education; program evaluation, student outcome development and assessment for national comparisons and further program development based on findings in order to maintain the high standards set by UTC Disability Resource Center; campus outreach and primary point person for problem solving regarding disability related issues; administer training to students, faculty and staff regarding disability and its impact in higher education, creating a culture of access, and the appropriate provision and facilitation of accommodations in the classroom, programs, and physical spaces; and direct student contact to include coaching, crisis management, intake meetings to determine academic accommodations and/or self-advocacy support, development and advisement of student organization related to disability.

The ideal candidate will possess the following:
  • Knowledge of the ADA-AA, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, and other relevant disability legislation
  • Ability to engage in supporting students with disabilities in the reasonable accommodation process
  • Ability to dissect relevant case law to determine findings and guidance to ensure compliance
  • Knowledge of the impact of disabilities on college students
  • Skills to navigate the intersection of disability and classroom management, disability and Title IX, disability and conduct, disability and campus environments
  • Ability to manage both professional relationships as well as relationships with students with disabilities
  • Skills in managing and estimating budgets

Minimum Qualifications: Typically requires a bachelor's degree in a relevant field and four years of relevant, progressively responsible experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience; and supervisory experience.

Preferred Qualifications: Master's degree in Special Education, Educational Administration, School Psychology, Counseling, or related field; experience in higher education with students with disabilities and demonstrated progression of responsibility; strong knowledge of disabilities and the impact on individuals in Higher Education; knowledge of the intersection of disability and Title IX, conduct, employment, residence support, classroom support, etc.; and knowledge of community services available to individuals with disabilities.
