Boston College Introduction

Founded in 1863, Boston College is a Jesuit, Catholic university located six miles from downtown Boston with an enrollment of 9,150 full-time undergraduates and 4,420 graduate and professional students. Ranked 31 among national universities, Boston College has 758 full-time and 1,096 FTE faculty, 2,750 non-faculty employees, an operating budget of $956 million, and an endowment in excess of $2.2 billion.

Job Description

This position will interact directly with faculty and administrators at various levels in a variety of departments. This position will interact with the Office of the Vice Provost for Research, Deans, Department Chairs, Center/Institute Directors, Faculty, Office of the Financial Vice President, and Human Resources on a regular basis. This position provides instruction and support to faculty, deans and department chairs, assistant deans for administration and departmental administrators on policy interpretation and management of all post-award activities. The incumbent also works collaboratively with a fellow OSP Pre-award team member and other members of OSP.

Each OSP Sponsored Program Administration Team (Pre and Post Admin.) is responsible for a number of specific academic departments, schools, centers and institutes (this number will fluctuate as research volume dictates). It is expected that each team member will provide guidance to a broad spectrum of constituencies, advising faculty, administrators, department chairs, deans, and institutional leadership of compliance mandates, policy, and Federal initiatives. Externally each team member will interact directly with the policy office, program office and financial management office of more than 40 external sponsors. These contacts include representatives from Federal agencies, corporations and foundations, State agencies, subcontractors and, when appropriate, staff from BC's public accounting firm, Price Waterhouse Coopers.

Each member of an OSP Sponsored Programs Administration Team will act independently and responsibly in: (1) making decisions as they pertain to their sphere of influence and responsibility for administering complex grants and contracts the Team oversees; (2) solving grants/contracts problems within their purview; (3) working closely with other OSP colleagues to solve university-wide research administration and grants/contracts management issues; and (4) working with faculty and departmental administrators to solve a range of grant/contract problems. The ability to identify and solve problems by working in collaboration with faculty and departmental administrators is an important expectation of each team member. Importantly, the incumbent must be able to maintain strict confidentiality.

More specifically the incumbent will investigate, communicate and coordinate with the research community to solve problems related to budget management, procurement, salary administration, billing and collections, financial reporting, cost transfers, effort reporting, cost sharing, over-expenditures and other post award research administration issues.

Mature independence to make decisions, along with a thoughtful ability to coordinate decisions with a fellow team member and the Director and Associate Director of Post-award Administration are key components of each team member's job. An ability to manage with independence and latitude - along with the ability to set priorities and execute one's responsibilities with skill and effectiveness - are essential skill sets.

Title and salary commensurate with relevant experience based on the following titles and hiring ranges:

Senior Assistant Director, Post-Award Administration (7+years experience): $74,375-$92,950
Assistant Director, Post-Award Administration (4-7 years experience): $65,750-$82,200
Grant & Contract Post-Award Administrator (0-4 years experience): $59,600-$74,500

Requirements

*Bachelor's degree required.

*3-5 years of experience working in sponsored programs administration or corresponding experience in working in departmental administration is preferred.

*Experience working with faculty/departmental administrators in an academic setting. *Knowledge of Federal regulations A-21 and A-110 for managing higher education research administration.

* Knowledge of Boston College internal financial accounting, payroll, procurement and budget system preferred.

* Ability to manage a complex workload with multiple competing demands and intense deadline pressure.

* Willingness and interest in participating in professional research administration organizations. *Continuing professional education as provided by professional organizations (NCURA, SRA, etc.).
