Assistant Professor in Professional Counseling programs

William Paterson University invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track faculty position for the 2024-2025 academic year at the rank of Assistant Professor in the Professional Counseling programs in the College of Education, Department of Special Education, Professional Counseling, and Disability Studies. Position starts August 28, 2024.

The Professional Counseling area offers the MEd in Professional Counseling: Clinical Mental Health Concentration, the MEd in Professional Counseling: School Counseling Concentration, the Director of School Counseling Certificate, and the Student Assistance Coordinator Certificate. The CACREP-accredited professional counseling program seeks to prepare, educate, and mentor ethical and competent professional counselors who are knowledgeable in issues of diversity and life span development. The program further seeks to enhance development of self-awareness, skills in advocating for clients/students and the profession, consultation and collaboration skills, and clinical practice in a diverse and technological society. This position reports to the chair of the Department of Special Education, Professional Counseling, and Disability Studies, which also houses an undergraduate major and minor in Disability Studies, an undergraduate minor in Special Education, graduate certificates in Teacher of Students with Disabilities and Learning Disabilities Teacher-Consultant, and MEd programs in Special Education.

Duties and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Teaching:
  • Teach 24 credits annually of graduate courses, online, hybrid, and in person.
  • Provide students with consistent and effective advisement, support and guidance in their academic endeavors.

Service:
  • Attend department and college meetings and participate in activities and events of the department, college, and university designed for student recruitment, retention and graduation.
  • Participate in and contribute to assurance of learning assessment and accreditation as well as curriculum and program development.
  • Serve on department, College of Education, and University committees and councils.

Scholarship:
  • Enact a professional counseling research agenda with consistent productivity as evidenced by academic presentations, peer-reviewed presentations, peer-reviewed journals, grant activity, and other field appropriate publications.

Required qualifications:
  • An earned doctoral degree in counselor education, preferably from a CACREP-accredited program; or a related degree and serving as a counselor educator meeting CACREP 2024 standards for core faculty requirements (ABD may be considered);
  • Experience in teaching graduate-level courses in professional counseling.
  • Ability to teach courses in multiple modalities and platforms including online.
  • Practice, professional development and scholarship in professional counseling.
  • Must hold an LPC (or LPC eligible) and ACS (or eligible/equivalent)
  • School Counselor certification preferred
