Job Description:
The Barnes Center at The Arch is Syracuse University's integrated health and wellness center which incorporates health promotion, counseling, health, and recreation. As part of the Health Promotion team, the Assistant Director for Substance Use Harm Reduction is responsible for developing and implementing a comprehensive, data-driven, evidence-based strategy for the Syracuse University student population to reduce harm associated with substances such as alcohol, cannabis, and other drugs.

The Assistant Director for Substance Use Harm Reduction is responsible for coordinating and implementing the delivery of recovery ally trainings and creating opportunities to support students seeking recovery. This position has oversight for content creation and delivery of educational programs, coordinating and facilitating sanction-related programs, serving as the campus liaison for the state Opioid Overdose Prevention Program, and compiling the biennial review for compliance with the Drug Free Schools and Communities Act.

The Assistant Director for Substance Use Harm Reduction serves as the primary point of contact for campus-wide initiatives and serves on interdisciplinary teams addressing campus substance use. The Assistant Director is part of the Health Promotion Leadership Team and supervises professional staff.

Qualifications:
  • A bachelors degree in health education/promotion/public health, social work, psychology, public administration/policy, or a related field required.
  • At least three (3) years of professional experience in the field of health promotion/public health/community health.
  • At least one (1) year of experience coordinating and delivering health promotion and/or alcohol and other drug prevention programming.
  • Knowledge of best practices for substance use harm reduction including recovery programming.


Job Specific Qualifications:
  • Masters degree in health education/promotion/public health, social work, psychology, public administration/policy, higher education administration, or related field preferred.
  • Experience creating collaborative relationships.
  • Experience providing training and on-going development to young adults/employees.
  • Demonstrated understanding of principles of diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility and application of these principles within the context of health promotion and social justice.
  • Demonstrated understanding of trauma-informed practices.
  • Advanced understanding of the development, implementation, evaluation, and prioritization of primary prevention programs in an institution of higher education.
  • Excellent presentation/oral, written and interpersonal communications skills.





Responsibilities:
  • Responsible for the strategic direction and assessment of substance use harm reduction programming and recovery initiatives.
  • Directly supervise a professional staff Health Promotion Specialist and Graduate Student Employee.
  • Provide training and development to professional and student staff on substance use harm reduction and recovery.
  • Serves as the campus liaison for the state Opioid Overdose Prevention Program, and compiling the biennial review for compliance with the Drug Free Schools and Communities Act.
  • Serves on cross-departmental committees and initiatives.
  • Some evening and weekends may be required.
