The Assistant Director of Prospect Development is a staff member of University Advancement with full-time responsibilities within the unit of Advancement Planning and Operations. The Assistant Director reports to and takes direction from the Director of Prospect Development. Duties are executed according to the policies and procedures of University Advancement.

The position's core responsibility is to assist ongoing efforts to grow, enhance and innovate the prospect development program's prospect identification, prospect management and business intelligence. The position's most critical requirements are an understanding of the Advancement process, as well as, strong process development, project management, interpersonal, business intelligence and analytical skills. The Assistant Director should have a strong familiarity with existing and emerging best practices in prospect management and evolving tools in prospect research and prospect identification.

  1. Prospect Development Strategy, Systems, Analytics, Reporting and Processes (40%)



  • Develop strategies to grow the size and value of the managed prospect pool university-wide through maintenance and analysis of information including producing reports, business intelligence statistical models and data collection

  • Creates novel research identification and prospect qualification methods, models and projects using in-house and third-party vendors.

  • Develop efficient end user reports such as pyramids, gift tables, graphs, visualizations and geographical maps to facilitate strategy and understanding to influence or shape successful strategy, next steps, and outcomes.

  • Contribute to the ongoing deployment of Prospect Development systems including training, troubleshooting, and implementation strategies to help drive fundraising success.

  • Work with an advanced analytics team on the business side of data visualizations for a wide-range of users at all levels of the organization.

  • Identify opportunities where existing business intelligence reporting tools can meet ongoing business needs for fundraisers, managers, and leaders within all areas of development.

  • Participate in cross-departmental projects to improve understanding and strategic use of Prospect Development data.

  • Review existing systems for efficiency and end-user experience.



  1. Prospect Management (40%)



  • Lead staff training regarding Prospect Management initiatives broadly. Collaborate with the JMU community to create best practices for the comprehensive monitoring and tracking of managed and engaged prospects.

  • Lead conversations on all aspects of Prospect Management including portfolio optimization, system training, and process change management.

  • Lead conversations regarding size, balance, value, and yield to measure portfolio and pool performance.

  • Assist fundraising managers with portfolio management across fundraising teams using existing resources and best practices.

  • Plan portfolio management/moves management, strategy, and optimization meetings with fundraisers in a scheduled, consistent manner.

  • Promote policies, processes, projects, and strategies that drive effective donor qualification, solicitation and relationship development.



  1. Prospect Research (10%)



  • Create strategies for identifying new prospects and keeping current prospect ratings accurate.

  • Keep current with industry trends and implement useful new approaches, services and tools.

  • Maintain a service structure that supports the information needs of all fundraising departments (Advancement VP, PRD, Development, Constituent Relations and Athletics).

  • Provide reliable and high quality data and analysis.



  1. Function on as a member of the Advancement Planning & Operations (APO) (10%)



  • Provide leadership

  • Assist the Director of Prospect Development planning and implementing a comprehensive fundraising and prospect management system based on the priorities of the university.

  • Assume responsibilities as assigned by the Director of Prospect Development to meet University Advancement Division goals.

  • Work with division and campus partners to execute strategies to achieve maximum program success.

  • Maintain ongoing knowledge of campaign and prospect development best practices.

  • Attend department, unit and division meetings and events as requested.

  • Work in a collaborative team environment, sharing knowledge and newly identified sources with team and leading or participating in team projects.


Required qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree required, master's degree preferred.

  • A strong understanding of business intelligence, statistical modeling, reporting and data collection using programming tools such as R, Python and SQL.

  • Two – four years related experience; preferably in a higher education advancement.

  • Strong verbal communication skills with the ability to deal effectively and sensitively with diverse populations.

  • Excellent time management skills and use of effective tracking methods to complete work and projects.

  • Strong leadership and interpersonal skills that demonstrate respect for others, support for department and organizational goals and the ability to work as part of a team.


Preferred qualifications:

  • Ability to analyze information to identify key issues and effectively adjust.

  • Proficient software skills in Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint), email, internet, relational databases

  • Coding familiarity SQL, R, Python

  • Statistical analysis.
