Assistant Director - Network Engineering

Responsibilities:

The Division of Information Services is currently seeking a talented individual to fill the role of Assistant Director, Network Engineering. The AD, Network Engineering manages the implementation, administration, maintenance, and operation of NUnet, ResNet, and NUwave networks. The AD, Network Engineering supervises networking engineering staff on all ongoing projects. The AD, Network Engineering is responsible for the overall effectiveness and efficiency of the day-to-day operation of the network engineering organization to ensure customer satisfaction. Performs proactive resource management. Defines service levels, service agreements and manages the development of the network engineering personnel. The AD, Network Engineering provides guidance to the network operations team. The AD, Network Engineering maintains ownership and accountability for tasks and projects.

The incumbent must instill a consultative approach for customer engagement. The AD, Network Engineering plans and recommends network hardware, systems management software and architecture; approves and modifies network design and architecture to ensure compliance; configures and maintains routers, switches, and appliances for the network system; monitors network performance; ensures capacity planning is performed; and is proactive in assessing and making recommendations for improvement.

The AD Network Engineering will lead by example; participation in network engineering and management is expected to ensure reliability, scalability and availability of University-wide network services.

To ensure that essential services are provided to the university community, the employee will be required to work outside their regular working hours as needed.

Qualifications:

Management:

Bachelors Degree in computer science, information technologies or engineering discipline required. Requires excellent organizational, and communication skills, both written and verbal. Must have thorough understanding of business considerations, both long-term planning and operational. A minimum of four or more years managing network engineering teams. 4+ years managing complex/enterprise network projects, using standard project management methodologies. Demonstrated experience working in a diverse environment with other management peers toward project goals. Demonstrated experience in motivating skilled technical network personnel.

Technical:

A minimum of 5+ years experience designing and implementing large, interoperable, multi-protocol enterprise-wide networks. 8+ years network engineering and operations experience. Complete understanding of all seven layers of networking protocols including but not limited to: TCP/IP, Multicast and QoS. Knowledge and experience in designing and implementing metropolitan and wide area networks. Experience designing and implementing VoIP and Unified communications networks, on premise and hosted. Understanding of and experience with network security issues. Experience with Cisco, Juniper and Aruba products preferred. Proven expertise in troubleshooting Ethernet wired and wireless networks. Thorough knowledge of networking standards, protocols and engineering tools are required; Internet and related technologies, e.g. VPNs. Thorough technical knowledge of multiple operating systems including Windows, Mac OS and UNIX. Hands-on experience writing technical scripts to maximize automation of administrative responsibilities.
