About the Position:

The Capital Programs and Facilities Management Department is committed to planning, developing, and maintaining a safe, sustainable, and high quality learning and working environment for the campus community. We are seeking an exceptional individual to join our team as the Air Conditioning/Refrigeration Mechanic. The ideal candidate in this role should have a positive attitude, an active, energetic mind, and a leadership style that is characterized by highly ethical practices and a commitment to diversity, openness, flexibility, integrity, and kindness.

Under the general supervision of the Supervising Building Service Engineer, the Air Conditioning/Refrigeration Mechanic installs, troubleshoots, calibrates, services, repairs, and maintains refrigeration and HVAC systems, equipment, instruments, and controls using electrical, electronic, pneumatic or digitally controlled systems. Oils, cleans, adjusts, overhauls, and repairs motors, condensers, compressors, oil and vacuum pumps, and similar equipment. Performs major overhauls involving disassembly and inspection of all parts, replacement of defective and worn parts, reassembly of equipment instruments and/or controls, and testing of equipment to ensure proper functioning. Locates and diagnoses malfunctions using a wide variety of test equipment and instruments. Analyzes the efficiency of campus refrigeration and air conditioning systems and recommends actions for improvement. Responds to service requests, diagnoses problems in the distribution of air to individual rooms and buildings, and makes necessary adjustments. Uses building automation systems to diagnose and troubleshoot problems in HVAC and refrigeration systems. Maintains inventory and records. Orders parts and supplies. Trains and provides work direction to skilled and semi-skilled workers. Other duties as assigned.


Essential Qualifications:
Journey-level skills equivalent to those acquired through the completion of a refrigeration or air conditioning mechanic apprenticeship program. One year of experience in the installation and repair of central multi-zone air conditioning systems. Progressively responsible experience in the installation, adjustment, maintenance, and repair of commercial and domestic refrigeration and air conditioning systems involving modulatory and safety controls, thermostats, humidifiers, and ducting.

Thorough knowledge of the theory and operation of major types of refrigeration and air conditioning equipment. Thorough knowledge of the materials, equipment, and techniques used in the repair and maintenance of equipment. Working knowledge of electrical voltage, plumbing refrigeration, electrical and plumbing codes, thermodynamics, and automated energy and environmental management systems. Ability to install, operate, and repair HVAC equipment and systems. Ability to read, interpret, and work from blueprints, plans, drawings, and specifications. Ability to make rough sketches, estimate costs, time, and materials necessary for mechanical work. Ability to maintain records and retrieve data related to work performed using manual and/or computerized record-keeping systems. Ability to prepare standard reports. Ability to provide instruction to unskilled and semi-skilled assistants. Ability to analyze and respond appropriately to emergency situations. Ability to read and write at a level appropriate to the position and perform arithmetic calculations required by the position. Ability to use judgment and discretion in determining the methods and priorities of work orders. Ability to perform skilled electrical and plumbing work, diagnose and repair major malfunctions in complex multi-zone air conditioning systems, devise and control air distribution efficiently with maximum comfort, and diagnose and repair the full range of refrigeration equipment including centrifugal, absorber equipment, and screw, scroll, and reciprocating refrigeration equipment. Possession of customer service and interpersonal skills.

A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily and is required for employment. Special Working Conditions:
Works on uneven surfaces. Works within construction sites. May be required to work off hour shifts and/or weekends. Ability to wear a respirator. Move and install equipment weighing up to 50 lbs. Able to climb and work on a ladder, man lifts. Able to work in confined spaces. Work is performed inside and out in a variety of weather conditions. Work shifts may vary and may include Saturdays and Sundays.
