General Laborer

Job Summary

Performs landscaping and grounds maintenance activities to support a safe, attractive, and well-maintained campus environment. Responsibilities include turf care, planting, pruning, irrigation support, seasonal cleanup, and maintenance of planting beds, trees, shrubs, and flowers. Contributes to the overall appearance of University grounds and supports public-facing campus activities and events. Work is performed under varying levels of supervision depending on classification level, with higher levels demonstrating increasing independence, expertise, and the ability to assist in training or mentoring others. This position is hourly, non-exempt, and not benefits eligible.

Responsibilities
General Laborer I -Perform routine manual labor in support of facilities, grounds, maintenance, construction, and operational activities under close supervision. Load, unload, move, and transport materials, supplies, equipment, and tools. Assist with site preparation, setup, cleanup, and debris removal. Operate hand tools and basic power tools as directed. Assist skilled trades personnel and other team members with assigned work. Maintain work areas in a clean, organized, and safe condition. Follow established safety procedures and use required personal protective equipment (PPE).Report equipment malfunctions, safety concerns, and maintenance needs to supervisors. Interact professionally with faculty, staff, students, and visitors. Perform other duties as assigned.

General Laborer II-Perform a variety of manual labor duties in support of facilities, grounds, maintenance, construction, and operational activities with moderate supervision. Load, unload, transport, and stage materials, supplies, tools, and equipment. Perform site preparation, cleanup, and material handling activities. Operate hand tools, power tools, and assigned equipment safely and effectively. Assist with basic maintenance, repair, and installation projects. Support construction, renovation, moving, and event setup activities. Maintain work areas, equipment, and tools in a clean and safe condition. Follow established safety procedures and departmental guidelines. Identify and report safety concerns and equipment issues. Perform other duties as assigned.

General Laborer III -Perform advanced manual labor and operational support activities with minimal supervision. Independently complete assigned projects and work activities. Operate tools, equipment, and vehicles required to support departmental operations. Assist with maintenance, repair, installation, construction, and grounds-related projects. Coordinate material movement and job site organization to support efficient operations. Monitor work quality and ensure assigned tasks are completed safely and effectively. Assist in training and on-boarding new or less-experienced employees. Identify operational issues and recommend improvements to work processes. Maintain compliance with safety standards and department procedures. Perform other duties as assigned.

*DRIVER'S LICENSE REQUIRED

This position may be filled at either General Laborer level 1-3. Placement will be based on the selected candidate's qualifications, experience, skills, and demonstrated competencies.

Minimum Qualifications
EQUIVALENCY STATEMENT: 1 year of higher education can be substituted for 1 year of directly related work experience (Example: bachelor's degree = 4 years of directly related work experience).
Department may hire employee at one of the following job levels:
General Laborer, I: Requires little to no related experience.
General Laborer, II: Requires at least 1 year of related experience.
General Laborer, III: Requires 3+ years of related experience.
