Adjunct Faculty: Medical Assisting Certificate Program

SALARY: Minimum salary is $1,512 per credit hour. Actual salary is commensurate with the DCE Collective Bargaining Agreement

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:

The Health Professions Division invites applicants for an adjunct faculty position to teach in our Medical Assisting Certificate Program. Each MAC course will run for 7 weeks and needs to be developed in a hybrid modality. Starting with the following MAC core courses:

MAC 138, Introduction to the Professional Medical Assistant: This course introduces the medical assisting profession, preparing students for clinical and administrative roles in healthcare. Emphasis is placed on communication, professionalism, cultural competence, and workplace readiness. Students develop skills in communication, time management, and ethical decision-making while learning to address diverse patient needs. Training includes simulated EMR use, HIPAA compliance, and hands-on experience with patient intake, scheduling, and documentation.

MAC 142, Medical Assisting Clinical and Laboratory Procedures I: This course provides a foundation of clinical skills necessary to function as an entry-level medical assistant in a variety of health specialties. Examples of topics include: the medical history; vital measurements; documentation; assisting with exams, special procedures, and office surgery; infection control; diagnostic lab tests, ECG, and phlebotomy; nutrition, and patient education. (2 hours of lecture and 4 hours of lab per week.)

MAC 148, Ambulatory Care in Health and Disease: This course will introduce students to the systems and structural organization of the human body while comparing structure and function across the life span. Students will also be introduced to diseases common to the ambulatory care setting and the signs, symptoms, etiology, diagnosis and treatment of diseases common to each body system.

MAC 150, Introduction to Pharmacology for Medical Assistants: This course introduces students to the basic principles of pharmacology and medication administration in the healthcare setting. Students will explore drug classifications, mechanisms of action, routes of administration, and safe medication practices. Emphasis is placed on developing proficiency in dosage calculation, including the use of the metric, apothecary, and household measurement systems.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Teach courses- in lecture and in lab- as assigned by the Division Dean.
Develop each course in a hybrid modality (attend training provided by Center for Teaching Learning and Innovation).
Prepare course syllabi, proctor and grade course assessments for both lecture and laboratory as scheduled, report final student grades, and complete student alerts by the specified dates each semester.
Develop and apply assessment strategies that maximize the learning process and measure student learning outcomes
Embrace the ideals of diversity and inclusiveness and support the equal rights of all people by advancing the understanding and appreciation of differences including age, race, gender, ability, religious convictions, socio-economic status, ethnic heritage, or sexual orientation.
Perform other duties as assigned consistent with the provisions of the collective bargaining agreement.

Job Requirements:

Associate degree or higher in medical assisting or a degree in a related field with graduate-level credit in the subject area.
Evidence of commitment to and experience working with a diverse student body
Knowledge of current Medical Assisting practices.
Evidence of successful prior Medical Assisting teaching in higher education.
Candidates will be required to pass a CORI/SORI and/or National background check as a condition of employment.
