Job Description
Under the direction of the Vice President for Student Affairs, the Student Life Coordinator develops and implements a comprehensive student engagement program that supports student success, belonging, leadership development, and connection to Great Basin College. The position identifies emerging trends and student needs and creates educational, cultural, social, civic, recreational, wellness, and community engagement opportunities that complement the academic experience. Programming is designed to serve students across all GBC locations and online, with attention to the needs of adult learners, first-generation students, veterans, dual credit students when appropriate, and other nontraditional populations. The Coordinator advises the Student Government Association (SGA), develops student leadership opportunities, supports the creation and sustainability of student organizations, and works with the Events Committee and campus partners to coordinate signature events, campus traditions, basic-needs initiatives, and GBC's food pantries.
The Coordinator collaborates with faculty, staff, Communications and Marketing, and community partners to create a visible and welcoming Student Life presence across the College. The position develops communication strategies that promote programs and student experiences through social media, newsletters, campus signage, the Student Life website, photography, and storytelling. The Coordinator assesses student engagement through participation data, surveys, student feedback, and program evaluations and prepares an annual Student Life report to guide continuous improvement. The position manages Student Life and programming budgets, supports oversight of the SGA budget, and recruits, trains, supervises, and mentor's student employees, interns, and peer leaders while developing their leadership, communication, and professional skills.
This position is located at the main campus in Elko, NV and requires occasional travel, including overnight stays to various locations within the state of Nevada.
Qualifications
- Associate's degree from a regionally accredited institution in Education, Communications, Business, or a related field. Bachelor (or Masters) degree in Higher Education, Student Affairs, Educational Leadership, Counseling, or related field is preferred
- Experience working with diverse student populations. Prefer two or more years of experience coordinating student activities, leadership development, student organizations, orientation, campus programming, or related student affairs functions.
- Demonstrated commitment to student engagement, belonging, and student success.
- Strong organizational, communication, event planning, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work evenings and weekends as required for student programming.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience advising student organizations or student government.
- Experience supervising student employees or student leaders.
- Prefer experience working at a community college, rural-serving institution, or multi-campus college.
Responsibilities
- Coordinates educational, cultural, social, civic, recreational, wellness, and community programming aligned with institutional priorities and student needs.
- Ensures engagement opportunities are accessible across campuses, instructional modalities, and student populations, including first-generation, adult, veteran, rural, and nontraditional students.
- Advises the Student Government Association (SGA) and develops student leadership through training, workshops, retreats, recognition programs, and committee participation.
- Supports student organizations through recognition, leadership coaching, advisor support, event planning, policy guidance, and organizational development.
- Coordinates signature events and traditions, including Welcome Week, cultural celebrations, volunteer activities, finals programming, family events, and student appreciation.
- Collaborates with faculty, staff, Communications, and campus partners to promote Student Life through social media, newsletters, websites, and other communication strategies.
- Coordinates engagement initiatives across GBC locations, fostering shared responsibility for student engagement and campus culture.
- Oversee GBC food pantries and basic-needs initiatives and connects students with campus and community resources.
- Manages Student Life budgets, supports oversight of SGA funding, and administers resources consistent with NSHE and College policies.
- Recruits, trains, supervises, and evaluates student employees, peer leaders, and volunteers.
- Assesses engagement through participation data, surveys, evaluations, and student feedback; prepares annual reports and recommends improvements.
Other:
- Participate in college wide activities and committees as appropriate.
- Occasional travel throughout Nevada with possible overnight stays, with or without accommodations under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
- Other duties as assigned.
Compensation Grade
Administrative Faculty - C
This is a 12 month "A" contract position, 12 month contracts are used for year round programs.
The budgeted salary range for this position is $61,553 - $72,000
Salary is based on relatable education and experience, internal equity and budgets.

Grants-in-aid for Faculty Employees
Great Basin College is proud to provide a reduced-rate tuition benefit to faculty and qualified dependents. Faculty can take up to six credits per semester at a reduced rate. Dependents of faculty have unlimited credits, but in order to be eligible children must be unmarried and under the age of 24 and must receive at least 50% of their financial support from the employee and/or employee's spouse or domestic partner.

Newly hired faculty must assure that their official transcripts are sent by the degree granting institution(s) to Great Basin College Human Resources Office within 30 days from the effective date of employment. Regionally accredited institutions must have awarded academic degrees.
If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
