The Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) Program, accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE), is developing a pool of qualified applicants for potential part-time adjunct teaching positions. These positions are filled on an as-needed basis depending on course offerings, enrollment, and program needs. Applications remain active for one year. Candidates will be contacted only if a teaching need arises and they meet the qualifications for the position.

Adjunct Faculty Responsibilities:

  • Teach undergraduate courses within the Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) curriculum in an online, asynchronous learning environment.
  • Facilitate student learning using evidence-informed teaching practices consistent with the CSWE Educational Policy and Accreditation Standards (EPAS).
  • Foster an engaging, inclusive, and supportive learning environment that promotes student success.
  • Connect students experiencing academic or personal challenges with appropriate college support services, including advising, tutoring, accessibility services, and counseling.
  • Maintain an active online presence in assigned courses a minimum of four days each week.
  • Monitor course discussions, provide timely and substantive feedback on assignments, and respond to student inquiries within established college timelines.
  • Attend faculty meetings, either virtually or in person as appropriate, including the annual faculty meeting when requested.
  • Participate in ongoing professional development activities.
  • Demonstrate cultural humility and the ability to work effectively with students from diverse backgrounds.
  • Utilize Blackboard and other required instructional technologies effectively.
Note: Candidates are expected to have excellent oral and written communication skills and maintain reliable technology and high-speed internet access.

Essential Duties:
Under the direction of the BSW Program Director, adjunct faculty members are responsible for teaching assigned courses and facilitating student learning through effective online instruction.

Responsibilities include:
  • Complete the Charter Oak Faculty Orientation within 30 days of approval to teach.
  • Complete a quality review of assigned courses prior to the beginning of each term.
  • Actively engage with students throughout the course and respond to student questions within 48 hours.
  • Facilitate instruction using Blackboard according to approved course design.
  • Proactively contact students who miss assignments or demonstrate signs of academic risk.
  • Refer students to appropriate academic and student support services when needed.
  • Notify the BSW Program Director of significant student concerns or issues.
  • Post weekly announcements and instructional updates, including course overview videos when appropriate.
  • Provide timely, personalized, and substantive feedback on student work consistent with College grading policies.
  • Maintain accurate grading records and submit final grades by established College deadlines.
  • Collect and submit required program assessment and accreditation data.
  • Maintain professional communication with students, faculty, and College personnel.
  • Participate in department meetings, program assessment, curriculum review, and accreditation activities as requested.
  • Maintain current knowledge of developments in social work education and professional practice.
  • Comply with all College, CSCU, state, federal, and CSWE accreditation policies and requirements.


Minimum Qualifications:
  • Master of Social Work (MSW) from a CSWE-accredited program or a Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) from a CSWE-accredited program.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of post-degree professional social work practice experience.
  • Previous higher education teaching experience.
  • Previous experience teaching in an online asynchronous learning environment, including the use of a learning management system such as Blackboard, Canvas, or a comparable platform.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of generalist social work practice, the NASW Code of Ethics, and the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) Educational Policy and Accreditation Standards (EPAS).
  • Demonstrated proficiency using instructional technology, learning management systems, and common computer applications.
  • Excellent written, verbal, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to foster an engaging, inclusive, and student-centered online learning environment.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience teaching in a CSWE-accredited Bachelor of Social Work program.
  • Experience with competency-based assessment and CSWE Educational Policy and Accreditation Standards (EPAS).
  • Demonstrated expertise in one or more areas of social work practice (e.g., child welfare, behavioral health, healthcare, aging, policy, community practice, research, or clinical practice).
  • Experience mentoring or advising undergraduate social work students.
  • Bilingual or multilingual abilities.


Compensation:
Adjunct faculty are compensated on a per-student enrollment basis in accordance with Charter Oak State College policies.
