Job Summary
The Academic Advisor provides comprehensive academic advising and student support to a diverse population of undergraduate students at the University of Utah Asia Campus (UAC). This position assists students with academic planning, degree progression, course selection, and interpretation of university policies to promote timely degree completion and student success. This position also collaborates with faculty, staff, and academic departments at both the Utah Asia Campus and the University of Utah's Salt Lake City campus to ensure students receive accurate, consistent, and student-centered advising. The position supports the University's commitment to fostering an inclusive learning environment where students from diverse backgrounds can succeed academically and personally. It reports to the Assistant Director of the Academic Advising Center (AAC), a division within UAC Academic Affairs.
Housing in Korea will be provided to eligible international hires who require visa sponsorship and relocation to South Korea. Visa sponsorship will also be provided. As a condition of employment, the successful candidate must be eligible for a work visa in South Korea.
Responsibilities
Academic Advising & Student Support
- Serve as the primary academic advisor for undergraduate students in the Film & Media Arts, Games, and Business programs, with major assignments adjusted as needed.
- Provide proactive academic advising to students throughout their degree programs, including academic planning, course selection, graduation planning, and degree progression.
- Conduct graduation reviews and advise students on course sequencing, elective selection, and strategies to promote timely degree completion and student retention.
- Monitor student academic progress and maintain accurate degree plans using the University's degree audit system.
- Conduct mandatory advising sessions for incoming students to support their transition to the University and successful adjustment to the academic environment.
- Guide students through the major declaration process and ensure all program requirements are met.
- Evaluate transfer coursework in collaboration with academic departments to ensure accurate transfer credit evaluation and degree planning.
- Advise students transitioning between the Utah Asia Campus and the Salt Lake City campus, providing academic guidance to support a successful transition.
- Interpret and explain University academic policies, procedures, and FERPA regulations to students and families.
- Manage MATH permission numbers and coordinate related student communications and enrollment support.
Student Success Programs & Leadership
- Serve as the UAC liaison for the Honors College and Academic Standards.
- Coordinate and facilitate the UAC Academic Success Workshop for students on academic warning or probation.
- Coordinate targeted outreach initiatives to support student retention, persistence, and academic success.
- Plan and deliver academic workshops, presentations, and student success programming.
- Support the management of academic-related student outreach campaigns to promote student success.
- Co-lead the recruitment, training, supervision, and mentorship of Peer Advisors for assigned academic programs.
- Co-share responsibility for coordinating and preparing the academic components of New Student Orientation, including updating orientation materials, coordinating placement testing, and supporting academic programming.
Collaboration & Administration
- Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with faculty, academic advisors, and academic departments at both the Utah Asia Campus and the Salt Lake City campus.
- Support the Associate Dean of Faculty and faculty members on matters related to academic policy, student success, and undergraduate education.
- Maintain accurate advising records and complete required administrative documentation.
- Process expense reports and support routine financial and administrative operations.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in a related field.
- Minimum of one (1) year of academic advising or related student support services experience within the U.S. higher education system.
- Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively with students from diverse cultural, educational, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
- Strong intercultural communication, critical thinking, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Demonstrated knowledge of and ability to interpret university policies, procedures, and FERPA regulations while exercising sound professional judgment.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and work collaboratively in a dynamic environment.
Preferences
- Experience in academic advising within a large public higher education institution, preferably at the University of Utah.
- Experience supporting international, multicultural, or study abroad student populations.
- Experience advising students transitioning between multiple campuses or academic programs.
- Experience supervising student employees, peer advisors, or student leaders.
- Familiarity with student information systems, degree audit software, and academic advising technologies.
- Experience planning student success initiatives, workshops, or orientation programs.
