Description of Basic Functions and Responsibilities

DESCRIPTION OF BASIC FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Shasta College is seeking an experienced CDL Driving Instructor to provide hands-on, behind-the-wheel training.

This position is ideal for retired or semi-retired drivers who want to stay active in the industry, share their knowledge, and make a meaningful impact-without the demands of long-haul driving. Additionally, this position is great for anyone that is qualified and seeks part-time, punctuated, temporary work. Training hours are dependent on student enrollment

Our program is well-established and successful, with small class sizes (just 2 students at a time), allowing for a relaxed, focused, and highly rewarding teaching environment.

CLASSIFICATION: Temporary Employee Salary Schedule

SUPERVISOR: Project Coordinator of Community and Contract Education or designee

Typical Duties, Knowledge and Ability

Provide behind-the-wheel training for Class A students

Teach pre-trip inspections, vehicle control, backing, and safe road driving
Reinforce defensive driving and hazard awareness
Evaluate student performance and provide guidance
Prepare students for CDL skills and road testing
Maintain accurate training documentation
Model safe, professional driving habits
Total assignment hours is approx. 44 hours per student trainee

Experience/Education

Valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with no restrictions

Current DOT Medical Certificate (DOT Physical)
Minimum 2 years of commercial driving experience
Clean driving record
Strong communication and mentoring skills

Enrollment in the districts Controlled Substances and Alcohol Testing Program
Enrollment in the DMV employee pull notice program
Ability to safely demonstrate proficiency in commercial vehicles
