The Healthcare Security Supervisor is a hands-on position where exceptional customer service is the top priority. This role ensures the safety and security of patients, staff, and visitors at multiple healthcare facilities associated with the University of Utah, including the University Medical Center, Huntsman Cancer Institute, Huntsman Mental Health Institute, and several regional health centers.
Team members work under the direction of the University of Utah Chief Safety Officer in a dynamic 24/7 environment, with shifts during mornings, evenings, and overnight. Depending on location, employees may work 10-hour or 13-hour shifts, offering a schedule that provides ample days off and promotes a healthy work-life balance.
This role encompasses responsibilities in various areas, including a Level 1 trauma center setting, and provides opportunities to work in uniformed operations and patrol, dispatch, investigations, training, and risk assessment. Employees receive specialized training to work effectively with patients and address healthcare security's unique challenges.

Responsibilities
- Coordinates day-to-day operations of the Health Security Division under the supervision of a Health Security Manager, including attending meetings pertaining to safety and security.
- Directly supervises security professionals in the Health Security Division for University of Utah Health properties and Clinics. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training personnel; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining personnel; addressing non-criminal complaints; and resolving problems.
- Ensures adherence to established rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
- Ensures adequate security is provided in all designated areas to prevent theft and property damage within University of Utah Health system and other University facilities as needed. Implements preventive measures to minimize potential hazards.
- Prepares or assists in the preparation of work schedules and ensures adequate staffing levels.
- Ensures security incident reports and statistical data is completed properly and submitted on time.
- Initiates and coordinates new programs pertaining to proper security procedure to ensure current and effective methods are used.
- Supervises Health Security Professionals in their shift responsibilities.
- Performs the duties of a Health Security Professional as needed.
- Conduct daily shift briefings and incident report reviews.
- Provides de-escalation/personal safety and education/awareness tailored to varying populations within University of Utah Health to reduce crime, reduce loss, foster a positive security culture, and improve employee perceptions of safety.
- Effectively integrate security with organizational partners in Risk, Safety, Compliance, Privacy, Human Resources, Information Technology, Nursing, Facilities, and other critical functional areas, to include membership in appropriate committees, workgroups, huddles, and participation in recurring meetings and information exchanges.
- Provide appropriate guidance, direction, mission-based skills training, resources, and regular performance feedback to afford all team members the maximum opportunity to be highly successful.
- Analyzes Safety/Security related systems including but not limited to access, surveillance, monitoring, parking, securing and other related components.
- Performs and coordinates audits to support future planning.
- Ensures security staff receive appropriate new employee orientation, Infection Control, Security and Safety Training, Fire Safety, Infant Abduction, Emergency Preparedness, Annual UHealth Compliance Training and any other appropriate education tied to ensuring staff competency.
- Conducts foot and vehicle patrols throughout the University Hospital and Clinics, including a Level 1 Trauma Center environment, as part of a proactive safety and security program. Patrols may extend to off-campus University properties, clinics, and research centers. Inspects buildings, check doors and windows and looks for signs of intrusion.
- Controls access to designated University of Utah Health facilities by verifying identification, monitoring vehicles and packages, and managing the limited access program for internal doors.
- Maintains detailed logs to inform department heads of potential security concerns.
- Provides special services to the University community, including escorting individuals and assisting patrons and visitors with directions.
- Monitors the security of controlled substances and valuable equipment using surveillance systems to deter theft.
- Assists hospital staff during medical emergencies by managing crowd control and providing advanced de-escalation techniques. Collaborates with healthcare teams to ensure the safety and well-being of patients, staff, and visitors.
- Responds to threats and risks across the spectrum of workplace violence, addressing aggression that disrupts patient care or threatens the safety of staff and visitors.
- Assists in gathering information related to theft/property loss, workplace violence, and other incidents that may disrupt healthcare operations, referring matters to law enforcement as appropriate.
- Makes critical emergency decisions in response to public safety threats, prioritizing the health and safety of others even when personal safety is at risk.
- Prepares comprehensive reports and records to document incidents and ensure accurate communication.
- Obtains certifications in crisis prevention and physical intervention training systems through recognized training programs.
- Achieves Supervisor-level certification from the International Association for Healthcare Security and Safety (IAHSS).
- Assists medical staff with physical interventions involving disruptive or combative patients, ensuring the safety of all parties involved.

Work Environment and Frequency
Nearly Continuously: Exposure to infectious diseases (frequent contact with contagious or infectious conditions).
Often: Working in office and outdoor environments; exposure to extreme temperatures (cold and heat), loud noise (requiring raised voices to communicate), animals, and atmospheric conditions (such as fumes, odors, dust, mists, gases, or poor ventilation).
Seldom: Exposure to oils or other cutting fluids through air or skin contact.
Physical Requirements and Frequency
Nearly Continuously: Hearing, listening, walking.
Often: Sitting, repetitive hand motions (e.g., typing), bending, twisting, kneeling, squatting, crawling, balancing, reaching overhead, pulling, pushing, and lifting items up to 50 pounds. Occasionally, lifting items over 50 pounds may also be required.
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma, GED or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience).
Five years' related experience
Ability to successfully pass a background check
Demonstrated communications skills and a commitment to providing excellent customer service
A valid Utah Driver's License to be obtained within 6 months of hire.
A proficient knowledge and understanding of current electronic security equipment (proprietary alarms, CCTV systems, computers, etc.);
