Job Summary:
The Graduate Program in Energy Systems Management at the University of San Francisco invites applications for a full-time Visiting Assistant Professor position to begin Fall 2026. We are looking for an interdisciplinary energy scholar with specialized skills in one or more of the following areas: energy science and technology, energy modeling and data science, and electric utility economics, regulation, and policy. Applied experience in the energy field is highly valued.

ESM is an innovative, STEM-designated MS program focused on the clean energy transition. The two-year course of study prepares students for careers in energy through rigorous coursework that combines state-of-the-art professional skills with an interdisciplinary conceptual grounding. Classes are held in the evening at the USF downtown campus (101 Howard Street) and many of the approximately fifty students in ESM are employed while taking classes. Roughly one-half of the students have undergraduate degrees in science or engineering, and one in five are international, representing more than thirty different countries since the program's inception in 2017, including multiple Fulbright scholars. Graduates of the program go on to work across the energy field in utilities, consulting firms, technology companies, government and regulatory agencies, and non-profit organizations. The program fosters a strong sense of comradery and shared mission among its students, alumni, faculty, and staff.

Full Job Description:

Job Responsibilities: The successful candidate will be expected to teach 24 units per year, equivalent to three 4-unit courses in both the Fall and Spring semesters. Courses may include Electricity Systems, Energy Technologies, Energy Modeling, Integrated Resource Planning, and Quantitative Methods. Other teaching options include masters projects and internship advising, and new courses that could be developed and taught by the successful candidate, such as research methods, data science for energy, energy in developing countries, and geospatial analysis for energy. In addition to teaching, the successful candidate will be expected to engage in service to the department and college.

Minimum Qualifications: a PhD in energy science or engineering, energy and resources, energy policy, energy-related data sciences, or related discipline. The program at USF is highly interdisciplinary and the successful candidate will be expected to work across several knowledge domains. Industry, public sector, or non-profit experience in energy is highly desirable. The program will consider candidates who are on track to complete their dissertation by August 2026. This position requires a commitment to excellence in teaching within a culturally diverse environment. A strong record of teaching at the university level and an understanding of and commitment to support the mission of the University of San Francisco are required.
