The Director of Departmental Accounting oversees departmental accounting operations and Banner training, and ensures that departments understand financial and budget reports, providing expertise on budget balances, account activity, forecasting, and planning. This role manages accounting across departments and schools, including indirect oversight of junior accountants, Banner finance system security and access, internal controls, journal entries, and the Chart of Accounts. The Director also ensures timely financial reporting and delivers training on accounting and financial systems.

Summary of Responsibilities


  • Provide business intelligence data, reports and training to University departments and schools to aid them in decision making. Responsible to be the University's main point of contact for employees, departments, and divisions for financial related questions and support. CPA level accounting and financial reporting support to departments including overseeing all departmental journal entries and helping departments budget for the fiscal year.
  • Oversee the implementation and review of internal controls across the University. Review campus cash handling, address financial concerns, and perform reviews to help ensure compliance with policy and procedures.
  • Oversee the financial training of employees of the University relating to internal controls, finance related software, reporting and budgets, and finance related procedures and guidelines.
  • Oversee financial security of the University accounting system. Monitor changes to approval queues, accounting and purchasing system access, and other finance security related issues.
  • Maintain an understanding and knowledge of financial related issues required to perform assignments effectively and efficiently, including GAAP and GASB reporting requirements, reconciling accounts, and accounting for component units.
  • Perform other job related duties as assigned.
  • Responsible for maintaining the chart of accounts, which includes creating and deactivating indexes, funds, organizations, and accounts. Requires understanding the accounting relationship of each of these categories and their impact on maintaining a proper accounting structure to ensure accounting data integrity and proper financial reporting.


Qualifications / Licenses / Certifications


Graduation from an accredited institution with a bachelor's degree in a related discipline, plus six years of staff-level experience or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience related to the Summary of Duties totaling ten years.

Preferred Qualifications
Graduation from an accredited institution with a Bachelor's degree in Accounting (or related field) and ten years of related experience; OR a Master's degree in Accounting (or related field) and eight years of related experience.

Licenses or Certifications
Certified Public Accountant (CPA) certification and or business intelligence analyst certificate, preferred.

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities

Knowledge
  • Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles and procedures.
  • Knowledge related to the design and implementation of internal controls.
  • Knowledge of theories and techniques involved in the analysis of financial data.
  • Knowledge of PC computer systems and software, including spreadsheets, word processing, graphics presentation, accounting software, and
  • Windows operating systems.
  • Knowledge of business intelligence software and report writing.
Skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to effectively communicate with a wide range of individuals and constituencies in a diverse community.
