POSITION SUMMARY
The Chair of the Engineering & Computing Department leads, coordinates, supports, and collaborates with the department faculty and adjunct instructors in work and initiatives aimed at supporting the college vision, mission, and strategic plan. The Chair shares a commitment to and exemplifies principles of equity, diversity, and inclusion in all work done within the department and as part of the college community.
The Chair, as a faculty member, teaches courses in their field of expertise and maintains a commitment to high-quality instruction and the ongoing pursuit of excellence.
As an active member of the CCA community, the Chair embraces and exemplifies the college values of respect, collaboration, quality, access, diversity, and inclusion when participating in a variety of institutional initiatives and activities, serving on committees, being a member of the STEM Division Leadership Team, and representing the college, the division, and the department to assigned groups and tasks.
OVERVIEW OF CCA
The Community College of Aurora serves our diverse community by providing high-quality instruction and support services to prepare students for transfer and employment. DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Department Chair provides leadership and management in the following areas.
Instruction & Student Learning
- Teach 12 credits per academic year in the department (will be adjusted based on contact hours for laboratory courses).
- Commit to becoming familiar with relevant instruction and assessment strategies, research, and latest findings identifying factors that positively impact the classroom and the learning experience of students of diverse backgrounds and identities.
- Utilize a variety of effective instructional strategies that help support all students to meet high expectations for active and independent learning and higher order thinking.
- Treat students with respect and be responsive to the students' needs within reasonable expectations.
- Clearly communicate to students at the beginning of a course what the students are expected to learn (course descriptions, syllabi, grading system, learning objectives, attendance policy, etc.).
- Develop methods of assessing student learning that are course-relevant as specified in the objectives and provide feedback in a timely manner for all assigned classes.
- Conduct classes and evaluate student performance in accordance with the catalog, course description, and course competencies, as explained in the course syllabus.
- Maintain academic integrity and rigor appropriate to the discipline.
- Develop new course materials or curricula as needed.
- Uphold the vision, mission, and values of the college.
- Maintain currency and expertise in your discipline and teaching methodology.
- Hold classes at the scheduled time for the full period, except for emergency situations.
- Conduct student evaluations of instruction in accordance with established policies and procedures.
- Post and maintain office hours.
- Participate in mandatory compliance trainings.
- Participate in all departmental and college-wide assessment practices.
- Before the first day of classes, according to published deadlines, provide the department with a copy of course syllabi.
- Maintain accurate scholastic and attendance records in the learning management system adopted by the college, and submit required reports to meet deadlines, including submission of final grades by the published deadline.
- Attend departmental/divisional/instruction-wide meetings as called by the Department Chair, Dean, Vice President of Academic Success, and/or the President of the Community College of Aurora.
- Implement all departmental and college expectations.
- Abide by all relevant FERPA, CCCS, and SBCCOE policies and procedures.
Faculty are expected to engage in activities in order to establish a strong sense of community and support the college and the work of colleagues and students. Examples include, but are not limited to, the following. It is recognized that not all below-listed activities will be engaged in by every faculty member. Faculty members must work with their supervisors to develop a service plan at the start of each evaluation cycle.
- Participate in or lead activities that work to fulfill the mission and goals of the college outside of the classroom.
- Contribute to the department through service, including curriculum coordination and development and departmental assessment.
- Conduct student academic advising and outreach as needed.
- Participate in system, college-wide, and campus committee work.
- Sponsor and participate in student activities.
- Contribute to and attend college activities and events.
- Engage in professional growth opportunities.
- Provide contributions to the discipline.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Master's degree in an engineering or computer technology-related field (or a closely related field) from a regionally accredited college or university
- OR -
Master's degree from a regionally accredited college/university AND a minimum of 18 graduate credit hours in an engineering or computer technology-related field (or a closely related field)
- OR -
Content Knowledge Evidence - A related Associate degree (or relevant current industry license or certification) -AND- Occupational Experience Evidence - 2000 hours within the last 7 years of paid and/or unpaid professional industry experience (non-teaching) in related IT field (1-year full time equates to approximately 2000 hours)
-OR-
Content Knowledge Evidence - Bachelor's degree or Master's degree with 18 discipline related credits in an engineering or computer technology-related field (or a closely related field) from a regionally accredited college or university -AND- Occupational Experience Evidence - 2000 hours within the last 7 years of paid and/or unpaid professional industry experience (non-teaching) in related IT field (1-year full time equates to approximately 2000 hours). - 3+ years of post-secondary teaching experience.
- Demonstrated leadership experience in an academic setting.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
- A student-centered focus and experience with program development and curriculum development.
- Commitment to continuous quality improvement, ongoing professional development, and a resilience for a dynamic changing work environment.
- Demonstrated ability to engage and impact students in supportive ways.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience teaching in a community college.
- Department chair leadership experience at an academic institution.
- Ph.D. in an engineering or computer technology-related field, or a closely related field from a regionally accredited college/university.
- Experience with assessment of academic programs.
- Experience working at in programs aimed at encouraging access, retention, and completion of diverse student populations.
- Understanding of the mission and purpose of a community college.
- Demonstrated dedication to interactive learner centered teaching methods.
- Proven track record in developing and implementing various pedagogical approaches.
- Demonstrated ability to motivate and teach community college students of diverse backgrounds and learning styles, as well as students with varied levels of academic preparation.
- Demonstrated skills incorporating high impact practices in the classroom.
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION
Salary Range: Anticipated salary is $95,296.63 annually. This salary is determined by the qualifications of the selected candidate balanced with departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information.
