Position Summary:
The primary location of this position is on-site in Cullowhee, NC. This position is designated as being exempt from the State of North Carolina Human Resources Act (EHRA).

The Assistant Director of Accessibility Resources provides leadership, coordination, and direct student support to ensure equitable access to academic and campus programs for students with disabilities across undergraduate, graduate, and online learning environments. This role oversees accessibility and accommodation processes, facilitates the interactive process, and ensures compliance with federal and state disability laws, including the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973.

Working closely with students, faculty, and staff, the Assistant Director helps identify and remove barriers, determines and implements reasonable accommodations, and supports student persistence, retention, and success. The Assistant Director supports the department in ensuring accessibility in academic programs, campus housing, and student activities.

The Assistant Director serves as a key institutional resource on accessibility-related practices and compliance.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Knowledge and experience supporting individuals with disabilities, medical conditions, or physical and/or neurocognitive differences.
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), its amendments, and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 as each relates to students with disabilities in postsecondary education.
  • Effective communication and leadership skills.
  • Ability to demonstrate a professional commitment to maintaining strict confidentiality standards, respecting individual privacy, and supporting fair and consistent treatment of all individuals.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required for this position:
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Interested candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need for employment sponsorship or any other immigration-related assistance.
  • Minimum of masters degree from an accredited institution in Rehabilitation Counseling, Disability Studies, Special Education, Counseling, Psychology, Social Work, Student Affairs, or a related field.
  • Three years demonstrated experience working with individuals with disabilities and/or neurocognitive or physical differences.
  • Two years administrative or supervisory experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in evaluating disability documentation for eligibility and creating accommodation plans.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience working with individuals from a broad range of backgrounds, including individuals with disabilities or varying learning and communication needs.
  • Experience collaborating with multiple programs or departments in a professional setting.
  • Experience using student information systems and/or accessibility management systems (e.g., Banner, AIM, or comparable platforms).
  • Experience working in disability services or a related area in a postsecondary environment.
  • Working knowledge of ADHD, learning disabilities, autism spectrum disorders, and other neurocognitive differences, demonstrated through professional experience or training.
