Merced College is seeking a creative and forward-thinking Instructional Designer faculty with teaching experience to join our Innovation Center team. Reporting to the Dean of Innovation and Institutional Effectiveness, this role helps shape the future of teaching and learning at our institution. We're looking for an educator who brings fresh curriculum ideas, a strong grounding in research-based design principles, accessibility, and learning science, and a genuine passion for supporting faculty and students. The ideal candidate will have experience teaching in online, hybrid, or in-person environments, and will be excited to contribute to emerging efforts in AI-enhanced instruction, Immersive Learning, Competency-Based Education (CBE), and assessment development for Credit for Prior Learning (CPL). As part of the Innovation Center team, this faculty leader will champion equitable, accessible, and high-impact teaching practices. Responsibilities include consultation and training on the delivery of innovative instruction, maintaining Regular Substantive Interaction (RSI), leveraging the Canvas Learning Management System for course delivery and evaluation, and supporting curriculum development across the College. This role also contributes to instructional design projects, learning outcomes assessment, and campuswide initiatives that elevate student success. Salary Schedule: *Position's initial maximum salary placement is $96,951* All successful candidates with doctorates will receive both the two step placement and the doctoral stipend
General Description:
This is a full-time, tenure track assignment under the general direction of the Area Dean. This position will be hired as a faculty member within a discipline and reassigned as an Instructional Designer. This reassignment will provide instructional design services for faculty to support the use of high-quality online instruction and Learning Management Systems. In addition to developing effective and engaging instructional resources such as video tutorials, webinars, and online courses, the Instructional Designer will work with faculty and staff to develop and implement learning resources. The Instructional Designer will also develop and implement training programs to promote understanding of technology-mediated learning for staff and students, as needed. In addition, the Instructional Designer will stay current with current pedagogical and technical trends in online education to provide training and assistance to keep the district current with these technologies. The Instructional Designer, according to their expertise and discipline, may be assigned instructional load as part of their assignment.
The Instructional Designer will teach a variety of Instructional Design courses and workshops, which may vary from semester to semester, and must be able to integrate the basic principles of instructional design into both classroom and collaborative projects with faculty and staff.
Examples of Duties
Essential Functions:
- Develop and implement effective online education courses
- Collaborate with faculty and staff in the designing and development of course content including the integration of media technologies into traditional course content
- Assist in the development of course templates for all departments
- Develop and deliver workshops online education training programs on course development and concepts of online course delivery
- Create and publish user documentation, including web resources for supported technology tools and software
- Assist with the implementation of various college, district, and statewide initiatives
- Assist faculty with understanding and complying with accessibility requirements for online courses, face to face courses, and related digital learning content
- Maintain, train, and update best practices in area of instructional design
- Participate in the evaluation, selection, testing and implementation of hardware and software tools, technologies and services that empower faculty and enhance teaching/learning experiences and student services
- Provide related online education support by troubleshooting and resolving technology and system access issues
- Assist with the Educational Technology Training Center support services to faculty, students, and leadership, as needed
- Participate in the preparation and composition of status reports for ongoing projects
- Engage in data inquiry and self-assessment to develop strategies for student success, persistence, and equity
- Provide instruction in accordance with established course outlines and expectations
- Participate in the development and review of curriculum
- Participate in the development of teaching--learning methods and materials
- Participate in departmental, area, and campus professional activities/committees
- Participate in the College's learning outcomes assessment program, including course, program, and institutional assessments
Typical Qualifications
Required:
- Master's degree in Instructional Design/Technology or Educational Technology
OR - The equivalent
OR - Master's degree in any discipline AND
- Experience in instructional design, educational technology, and/or online learning development
AND - Current knowledge and experience in Instructional Design and related Learning Management Systems (e.g. Blackboard, Canvas)
- Demonstrated experience with online instruction and/or possession of online instruction certification
- Current technology skills related to teaching in the discipline and a willingness to pursue future technological developments
- Promote and incorporate culturally affirming DEIA and anti-racist principles to nurture and create a respectful, inclusive, and equitable learning and work environment. In conducting their duties, staff members shall respect and acknowledge the diversity of students and colleagues.
- At least one year of experience working collaboratively with administration, faculty, and staff on the development of online courses
- At least one year of experience with innovative teaching methods and curriculum development in a higher education setting
- Experience working with instructors to produce instructional materials and leverage technology to support teaching and promote learning
