Position Announcement

Utah Valley University seeks a highly skilled Therapist IV-Crisis Specialist to join the Student Health Services team, providing immediate and expert crisis intervention services under the direction of the Director of Crisis Services. This role is essential in offering rapid, short-term responses to students experiencing mental, physical, emotional, or behavioral distress. The Crisis Specialist utilizes advanced clinical expertise and certifications in crisis response, psychological first aid, and trauma-informed care to deliver best practices and ensure the well-being of those in need. Additionally, the specialist will contribute to the university's crisis response efforts by serving on committees, task forces, and potentially overseeing grant-funded projects as a grant project leader. This position is pivotal in fostering a safe and supportive environment for the UVU community.

Summary of Responsibilities


  • Individual Crisis Support-Provides intake, triage, psychological first aid, suicide assessments, and crisis response and safety planning. Uses least restrictive environment, trauma informed care, and counsel on access to lethal means (CALM) to de-escalate and ensure safety of the individual.
  • Evaluates for high risk, potential violence and suicide. Initiates and coordinates welfare checks through the police as needed. Provides information and connection to resources for on-going support. Group and Campus Crisis Support-Provides group crisis response, including psychological first aid, and outreach in response to critical incidents. Provides information and connection to resources for ongoing support.
  • Training, Education and Outreach-Provides training, education, and resources to individuals and groups throughout UVU both as a proactive and preventative measure, and in response to critical incidents. Maintains professional licensure. Consultation-Provides consultation services to both teammates with Crisis Services Team/Student Health Services and to individuals and leaders throughout the UVU community.
  • As assigned by the director, on behalf of Crisis Services as a crisis specialist utilizes clinical and crisis response expertise to function as a liaison between organizations on campus and in the community, serves on committees, and taskforces in representing Crisis Services. Serve as project leader over grants on behalf of crisis services. Serve as a university contact person for SafeUT. May collect data, prepare reports, oversee projects/events as assigned.
  • Other Duties-Performs other job-related duties as assigned, which may include providing clinical supervision.


Qualifications / Licenses / Certifications

Graduation from an accredited institution with a Masters or Doctorate in Mental Health field. (i.e., Psychology, Social Work, Marriage & Family Therapy or Clinical Counseling) and must have a minimum of five years of full-time experience in a clinical setting as a fully licensed clinician. Has direct experience and expertise in providing crisis intervention, suicide risk assessments, and trauma informed care. Meets the DOPL criteria to provide clinical supervision.

Preferred Qualifications:
Currently certified in the State of Utah as a Designated Examiner or able to sit for the exam/certification.

Licenses or Certifications:
Maintains current licensure requirement as a Mental Health Clinician in selected field of mental health specialty under licensure requirements and laws set by the DOPL and the State of Utah.
