Job Description:

Madison College is hiring a Senior Lab Coordinator to work within our Veterinary Technician (VT) Program. This position assists in the holistic education of our Veterinary Technician students throughout the school year, supporting the faculty in providing instruction to students and coordinating the operations of the Veterinary Technician Laboratory. Responsibilities may include managing the usage of laboratory equipment and media to meet student and faculty needs; assisting faculty in developing laboratory instruction and assignments; coordinating and assisting students in lab exercises; offering supplemental instruction to students; laboratory set-up and clean-up; preparing and revising laboratory operation manuals and providing on-call assistance approximately three to four weekends per semester.

This position reports to the Associate Dean in the School of Health Sciences and receives work assignments from the instructor of record and/or from the faculty program director.

This onsite position works full time, 40 hours per week, 42 weeks per year (generally late July through mid-May) with full-time benefits (some benefits are prorated for FTE). Position working hours could range from 6:00am to 5:00pm, M-F with some weekend on call work required.

Essential Responsibilities:
  • Performs set-up/clean-up of lab supplies and equipment, including maintenance of any equipment used during lab. Coordinates with instructor of record in assembling materials/supplies needed for labs.
  • Provides guidance/assistance to students in assigned program laboratory sections. Advises students of appropriate methods of laboratory procedures and animal nursing skills.
  • Provides assistance to instructor in development, set-up/clean-up, administration and grading of quizzes and exams. Monitors student performance of specific tasks in order to evaluate skill levels and provide instructors with advisory grades for assigned skills. Provides consultation and/or clarification of course material for students.
  • Animal Care and coordination for animals being used for laboratory learning to comply with course Animal Care & Use protocols. (Early morning or late afternoon).
  • Provides individual and group instructional assistance in surgical nursing skills: patient preparation, aseptic technique, recovery procedures, post-surgical care and dentistry; handling and restraint, collection of specimens, methods of treatment, sedation, nursing skills and radiology techniques in laboratory, companion and livestock animals; clinical pathology sample collection, preparation, evaluation, and diagnostic testing; handling and restraint, collection of specimens, methods of treatment, anesthesia, sexing, identification methods, humane euthanasia and necropsy.
  • Under direct supervision of a veterinarian, supervises students in anesthetizing and monitoring the recovery of various animal species.
  • Maintains a positive, productive and supportive working relationships with other Veterinary Technician program faculty and staff.
  • Maintains a commitment to the college mission, vision and values.


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Skill in communicating effectively and professionally, both orally and in writing.
  • Demonstrated skill in communications and human relations with populations of diverse socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds and persons with disabilities.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of identification, function, operation, and care, cleaning and maintenance of surgical instruments and Veterinary laboratory equipment.
  • Working knowledge of common anesthetic agents used for animal anesthesia, including a variety of inhalation anesthesia machines. Working knowledge of manual and automated hematology, serology, clinical chemistry, urinalysis, parasitology, microbiology and cytology. Working knowledge of clinical pathology instrumentation.
  • Ability to lift, pull and/or move animals and heavy objects weighing up to 50 pounds.


Minimum Requirements:
  • Associate Degree in Veterinary Technology/Veterinary Technician. Graduate of an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited Veterinary Technician program.
  • Three (3) years (6,000 hours) experience as a Veterinary Technician in a Veterinary Clinic.
  • Certification as a Veterinary Technician in the State of Wisconsin (applicants who are not certified must be certified within 12 months of hire).
