Job Description

Reporting directly to the Vice Provost for Enrollment Management and in consultation with the Director of Student Financial Strategies, the Director of Financial Aid (Director) will be responsible for implementing the University's financial strategies and leading the daily operations of Financial Aid within the Office of Student Services.

The Director communicates and collaborates with the Director of Student Financial Strategies and the Vice Provost for Enrollment Management to develop best practices and approaches for aid and student employment policies.

Aside from 18 Gabelli Presidential Scholarships awarded on the basis of academic merit, and athletic scholarships administered by the Athletics Department, all undergraduate financial aid is awarded strictly according to need as determined by Boston College institutional methodology. Boston College is a member of the 568 Presidents Group. Boston College meets the full demonstrated need of all admitted students through a combination of institutional grants, federal loans, and work study jobs.

Institutional grants for graduate students are awarded by individual graduate school enrollment offices, which work in conjunction with Financial Aid to administer federal loans.
The Director will lead a service-oriented team of 17 professionals who partner with offices across the University including Undergraduate Admission, Athletics, Student Affairs, Student Services, and the Office of Mission and Ministry.

The ideal candidate will have strong initiative and consistently dependable judgement in assuring compliance with Federal and State laws and policies as well as Boston College's policies governing the confidential financial information of students.

The Director of Financial Aid performs the following duties and responsibilities:
Oversee the (undergraduate and graduate/professional) financial aid program for Boston College;
Provide clear direction and oversight of Financial Aid to achieve goals aligned with the strategic directions of Undergraduate Admission and Boston College more broadly, which includes budgeting, planning, and staff leadership and development;
Coordinate maintenance and updating of the Policy and Procedure Manual;
Lead an efficient, effective, and collaborative work culture;
Create a student and family focused service model that fosters transparency, problem solving, and provides opportunities for financial aid education;
Manage a small caseload of key University constituencies; and
Represent Boston College at state, regional, and national conferences and to other external agencies and groups.

The successful candidate will be innovative and collaborative with excellent leadership and team-building skills. They will have demonstrated success and relevant experience in higher education.

The Director of Financial Aid will have the following experiences, capabilities, and attributes:
  • Seven or more years of financial aid experience;
  • Bachelor's Degree required, Advanced Degree Preferred;
  • Proven success in roles of increasing responsibility within financial aid and a demonstrated ability to supervise, manage, and motivate a diverse team of financial aid professionals;
  • Proven track record of excellence as a financial aid administrator and mentor, including strong verbal, written, technical, fiscal, and interpersonal skills;
  • Comprehensive understanding and experience with Institutional Methodology, Consensus Methodology preferred;
  • In-depth knowledge of best practices and regulations governing federal financial aid programs, including federal, state, and other relevant regulations governing aid, including Title IV compliance;
  • Proven ability to interact with applicants, parents, guardians, and current students regarding financial aid and student account issues in a proactive and positive manner while ensuring that all parties are heard and feel respected in the process;
  • Ability to build relationships and partner with colleagues across departments and levels to advance Boston College's priorities;
  • Proven ability to communicate clearly and effectively in writing and in-person;
  • Ability to provide overall direction and analysis for the Financial Aid office technology systems and programs; and
  • Distinct appreciation for the Jesuit, Catholic missions, traditions, and culture of Boston College.
