The Data Science program welcomes applications for an Online Programs Learning Facilitator! The online and asynchronous Master of Science in Data Science (MS-DS) and at the University of Colorado Boulder are innovative programs offering a rigorous curriculum and flexible learning model to a global population. The Data Science program is seeking a candidate who is passionate about accessible education and delivering a high quality online learning experience for students.

The Online Programs Learning Facilitator assists the online MS-DS degree program by providing course-specific individual or group student support and tutoring during office hours and facilitating student interactions within a virtual learning environment. This role is responsible for curriculum review and management, updates to existing digital course materials in coordination with course faculty, collaborating closely with Coursera representatives to mitigate issues related to the LMS, and grading assignments. Experience working with a non-traditional and global population of mid- or senior-level professionals is a plus. This role interfaces regularly with Coursera and department team members. Data Science is interdisciplinary in nature, drawing on the fields of statistics, applied mathematics, data science, computer science, information science, geospatial analytics, natural language processing, business analytics and more. Our curriculum leverages CU Boulder faculty expertise to offer technical depth and functional breadth while emphasizing cross-functional communication and teamwork-skills vital to data scientists, who increasingly work with stakeholders across a wide spectrum of domains.

CU Boulder data science students choose from multiple modalities, including a traditional on-campus degree and our innovative MS-DS on Coursera. Regardless of which option they choose, students engage with a rigorous, comprehensive curriculum and obtain high-level technical skills. Our alumni build complex quantitative algorithms to organize and synthesize large amounts of information and employ machine learning techniques to classify and predict behaviors, helping to answer questions and drive strategy in a wide variety of organizations. We are data science Buffs.


What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be


Course Delivery:
  • Holds regular online office hours with MS-DS students.
  • Actively monitors and engages with student discussion forums via Coursera or on Slack.
  • Serves as first point-of-contact for current students with course-related questions or concerns. Assists students with problem-solving and campus resources.
  • Sends out announcement messages, reminders, and instructions.
  • Creates documents/ systems that can support a large group of students to scale.
  • Develops and revises FAQs and help guides for each course.
  • Communicates responsibly and respectfully.

Learner Feedback and Grading:
  • Monitors Salesforce, ensuring tickets are managed and resolved.
  • Manages cases of academic dishonesty and advances if needed.
  • Conducts grade verification at the end of each session to ensure accurate grade reporting.
  • Grades peer review assignments as needed and provides detailed feedback to students.

Course Improvement:
  • Reviews course content for accuracy and consistency, including videos, readings, graded and ungraded assessments (including derivation, calculation, and some programming).
  • Create additional preparation materials for courses in the MS-DS on Coursera program to ensure student success.
  • Provides clear and actionable feedback on continuous improvement of course content and assessments.
  • Updates course content as needed (in coordination with Learning Experience Designer and instructor).

Administrative and Other Duties:
  • Collaborates with other DS department staff to ensure course information on the graduate program websites is accurate and up-to-date.
  • Supervise student course facilitators to assist with administrative and teaching responsibilities in the MS-DS on Coursera program.
  • Serves as the main point of contact for course information.
  • May assist other program staff with webinars and other outreach efforts.
  • Advocates for student services, specifically to create community within the online student population.
  • Helps the DS graduate program with other projects, as needed.
  • Undertakes other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
  • Stays apprised and current on relevant University and State of Colorado policies and procedures.
  • Participates in professional development activities and serves on unit, college or campus committees as applicable.
  • Recommends and implements process improvements to increase department efficiency.
  • Documents all processes and procedures making them accessible to team members.


What You Should Know


This is a full-time, remote position. We are able to offer a hybrid modality as well and plan on speaking more about this during the interview process.


What We Can Offer


The starting salary range for this position is $74,400 - $85,800 annually. Relocation assistance is available within department guidelines.

What We Require

  • Masters in Data Science, Computer Science (or a closely related field).
  • 2 years of professional relevant experience.
