Salary Grade: Staff, Grade 4

Hiring Range: $27 - $32 hourly

POSITION SUMMARY
Under the general direction of the Accounting Manager, the Accountant I applies principles of accounting to analyze financial information and performs complex professional and technical accounting functions for the Auxiliaries. This position is a professional accountant performing a full range of accounting skills while applying policies, procedures, governmental accounting standards and generally accepted accounting principles and practices to auxiliary financial activities.

Examples of Duties

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • General Ledger & Reconciliation: Perform complex reconciliations and analysis of general ledger accounts, applying problem-solving skills to implement resolutions including process improvements and necessary corrections.
  • Financial Reporting & Analysis: Participate in monthly and year-end close processes, including the preparation of journal entries, audit work papers, and the analysis of financial statements for auxiliary organizations.
  • Compliance & Audit Support: Ensure adherence to GASB regulations, tax rules, and GAAP while assisting with both interim and year-end audits by preparing schedules and working with auditors.
  • Budgetary Oversight: Monitor fund transactions and balances, perform cost and budget transfers, and review expenditures for allowability and fund availability.
  • Communication & Collaboration: Compose correspondence regarding accounting matters, respond to delegated emails, and collaborate with the AP Team Lead and Accounting Manager to update procedures.


Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree or the equivalent from an accredited four year college or university, AND
  • 1 year of related experience in professional accounting work

OR
  • A combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge and abilities.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Experience in a non-profit, educational or governmental environment is preferred.

Familiarity with Government Accounting Standards is desirable.

Experience with automated accounting systems, e.g., PeopleSoft Finance and experience with query tools.

Possesses strong time management skills and ability to set/adjust priorities in a deadline-oriented environment.

Candidates should be self-motivated, driven and focused on continuous learning and improvement.

Ability to effectively communicate information both verbally and in writing, in a clear, concise and professional manner.

Experience working with a diverse and multicultural population and performing community services; demonstrated technical literacy.

Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to the CSUMB Vision Statement and the core values of mutual respect, collaboration and service orientation, multiculturalism and diversity, community service and institutional excellence.
