Job Summary


The University of Colorado Athletic Department welcomes applications for the Head Football Athletic Trainer! This role will assist in managing the Athletic Department's comprehensive Sports Medicine Program while ensuring the health and safety of all student-athletes, with a direct focus on the Football Team. The role includes assisting in the development of policies and programs to promote general student-athlete health and wellness, managing the Champions Center athletic training room, and coordinating care with external medical providers. This position is pivotal in maintaining the highest standards of medical care, compliance with NCAA regulations, and ensuring a well-integrated health service approach across all athletic teams. The position reports to the Associate Athletic Director for Sports Medicine.

This position is responsible for promoting the philosophy and objectives of the intercollegiate athletics program. This shall include adhering to the principles of the Athletic Department's Mission Statement, Core Values, Policies and Procedures, as well as the rules and regulations of the University, the Big 12 Conference, and the NCAA.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be


SPORT COVERAGE

Injury Prevention and Care:
  • Assist in the healthcare of the Football Team student-athletes, focusing on injury prevention, diagnosis, rehabilitation, and return-to-play protocols.
  • Serve as the first responder to assigned teams' injury situations, ensuring immediate and effective care.
  • Collaboration with Medical Staff:
  • Assist the Associate Athletic Director for Sports Medicine with supervision for athletic trainers working within the Champions Center Sports Medicine Facility.
  • Collaborate with team physicians, physical therapists, and other healthcare providers to meet the medical needs of your assigned teams.

Medical Records and Communication:
  • Assist the Associate Director for Sports medicine in ensuring accurate and comprehensive medical records for all Football Team student-athletes.
  • Track rehabilitation progress and update the coaching staff regularly on the status of injured players.
  • Ensure seamless communication with the coaching staff, Strength and Conditioning Coaches, and physicians regarding injury status and participation ability.

Health and Welfare Oversight:
  • Maintain continuous communication with the Head Football Coach and coaching staff regarding all health and welfare matters of football student-athletes.
  • Communicate with Strength and Conditioning Coaches to assess each student-athlete's health and ability to participate in training sessions.

Injury Tracking and Reporting:
  • Ensure the maintenance of accurate, up-to-date injury records.
  • Provide injury reports to the coaching staff and collaborate on decisions regarding player participation.

Off-Season Conditioning:
  • Work with the athletic training staff to ensure NCAA-mandated coverage of all off-season conditioning sessions and non-traditional seasons.

Health and Safety Education:
  • Coordinate and administer health and safety education programs for assigned coaches and Strength and Conditioning Coaches, ensuring all personnel are informed and collaborating on player health and injury prevention.

Physician Care Coordination:
  • Coordinate and manage physician care for assigned student-athletes, ensuring timely access to specialists and appropriate medical interventions when necessary.

ADMINISTRATION

Leadership:
  • Assist in the overall management of the Champions Center Sports Medicine Facility.
  • Assist in the management of the assistant athletic trainers in the Champions Center Sports Medicine Facility.
  • Implement the initiatives approved by the Medical Office Manager to develop cost-effective measures.
  • Serve on designated task forces and committees within the department as needed.
  • Be responsible for the AED maintenance and checking program for the Athletic Department.
  • Coordinate Champion Center Athletic Trainers on yearly pre-participation physical exams.

Program Development & Policy Creation:
  • Collaborate in creating, implementing, and evaluating programs that champion the physical health and success of student-athletes, ensuring that their medical, mental, and nutritional needs are met.
  • Establish policies that guide the department's response to injuries, rehabilitation, and the overall healthcare of student-athletes.
  • Promote integrated care by collaborating with athletic, medical, and nutrition staff.

Collaboration with External Providers:
  • Maintain relationships with external medical providers, ensuring they align with the department's healthcare standards and protocols.
  • Coordinate referrals to specialists, ensuring that student-athletes receive timely and appropriate care.
  • Work within all University Health Science Center, Wardenburg Health Center, Boulder Community Hospital health care facilities, and University of Colorado Hospital and care centers.

Compliance & Health Policy Adherence:
  • Ensure compliance with all University, BIG XII Conference, NCAA, and other applicable regulations regarding student-athlete health, wellness, and safety.
  • Uphold the principles and core values of the Athletic Department, ensuring that the department's mission is reflected in daily operations.

Rehabilitation & Insurance Management:
  • Work with the Medical Office Manager to secure comprehensive sports injury insurance.

Budget & Program Coordination:
  • Supervise the Budget and Budget Development for the Champions Center Sports Medicine Facility.
  • Collaborate with Athletic Trainers, Nutritionists, Sports Psychologists, and University Physicians, ensuring harmony within the department.

STUDENT INTERN PROGRAM
  • Assist in the supervision of individuals in the sports medicine intern program, which includes teaching and evaluation.

DEPARTMENTAL RESPONSIBILITIES (Continual)
  • Demonstrate a thorough knowledge of NCAA, BIGXII Conference, University, and departmental rules and regulations. The violation of NCAA or Conference rules on the part of Athletic Department Personnel may result in disciplinary action up to and including termination of employment.
  • Adhere to principles stated in the Athletic Department's Mission Statement and promote loyalty to the mission by all staff and student-athletes under their supervision.


What You Should Know

  • Variable hours based on practice, competitions, and rehab. Willing to work weekends, evenings, and holidays.
  • Travel required.


What We Can Offer


$125,000 - $150,000. Relocation Assistance is available within Athletics guidelines.

What We Require

  • Bachelor's Degree in athletic training, kinesiology, health science or related fields.
  • NATABOC Certified athletic trainer. (6 years minimum)
  • State of Colorado Athletic Training License or eligible to obtain.
  • Leadership experience in collegiate Power 4 sports medicine program.
  • CPR/AED Certification.
