PS Nurse Practitioner

Job Summary

The Geriatric Psychiatry NP/APRN (GNP) provides comprehensive psychiatric evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment for older adults across inpatient, outpatient clinic, and skilled nursing or long-term care settings. This role focuses on the assessment and management of late-life mental health conditions, including mood disorders, psychotic disorders, cognitive disorders, behavioral symptoms of dementia, and comorbid medical conditions affecting psychiatric care. The provider practices within an interdisciplinary team to deliver patient-centered, evidence-based psychiatric care tailored to the unique needs of geriatric populations.

Responsibilities
Essential Functions

1. Conducts comprehensive psychiatric and medical assessments of older adult patients, including mental status examinations, cognitive assessments, functional evaluations, and relevant physical examinations, with attention to medical comorbidities affecting psychiatric presentation.2. Develops, implements, and periodically revises individualized geriatric psychiatric treatment plans, including diagnoses, prognosis, risk assessments, and short- and long-term care goals.3. Collaborates and consults with psychiatrists, geriatricians, primary care providers, neurologists, nursing staff, social workers, and other interdisciplinary team members regarding patient care planning and treatment coordination.4. Orders, interprets, and evaluates psychiatric and medical diagnostic tests, including laboratory studies, imaging, and cognitive screening tools, to identify and monitor clinical conditions relevant to mental health and aging.5. Performs psychiatric procedures and assessments within scope of practice and validated competence, such as suicide risk evaluations, capacity assessments, behavioral management planning, and medication monitoring for high-risk populations.6. Initiates, manages, and adjusts psychopharmacologic treatments and recommends or implements non-pharmacologic interventions in accordance with evidence-based practice, approved protocols, and institutional policy.7. Ensures thorough, accurate, and timely documentation in the electronic medical record, including psychiatric evaluations, progress notes, treatment plans, and required legal and regulatory documentation.8. Participates in quality improvement, patient safety, and performance improvement initiatives related to geriatric mental health, dementia care, and behavioral health outcomes.9. Provides education, counseling, and support to patients, families, and caregivers related to mental health conditions, cognitive disorders, medication management, behavioral symptom management, and health maintenance.10. Assesses and manages psychiatric emergencies in older adults, including acute agitation, delirium, suicidality, and behavioral disturbances, and coordinates appropriate levels of care.

Minimum Qualifications
Required
Licensure to practice as a Nurse Practitioner in the State of Utah.
Preferred
Certification in ACLS/BLS/NRP/ATLS may be required by your department or by privileging criteria.
Utah State prescriptive privileges.
Licensure is obtained by completing a Master's degree in Nursing or equivalency (the only equivalency to the Master's degree is current licensure as a Nurse Practitioner) and a National Certification which requires the successful completion of a nationally accredited examination.
UHPPM 1-56 requires that newly hired non-physician providers apply for credentialing and privileging at the time of hire.
This position is patient-sensitive and must fulfill all associated requirements. Limited exemptions may be made for documented medical contraindications or religious beliefs that object to vaccinations.

Preferences
DNP-prepared Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner with focused experience in geriatric psychiatry.Clinical experience caring for older adults with mood disorders, psychotic disorders, neurocognitive disorders, delirium, and complex medical-psychiatric comorbidity.Experience in inpatient psychiatry, consult-liaison services, memory clinics, skilled nursing facilities, or long-term care settings.Advanced expertise in geriatric psychopharmacology, including polypharmacy management, deprescribing, and high-risk medication monitoring.Experience conducting capacity evaluations, behavioral management planning, and risk assessments in older adults.
