Web Application Developer, Information Technology–Requisition # 1800000196

The Web Application Developer delivers effective, customer-centric portal and web technology solutions that are integrated, easy-to-use, accessible, and up-to-date. This position manages, maintains, troubleshoots, and improves applications, integrations, and databases used to support the University public web site, the student web portal, content management systems (CMS), and other application and database technologies within the Information Technology department. This position is a liaison with representatives from various functional offices, academic units, governance committees, and information technology staff to provide effective web solutions used across the campus.

Responsibilities include:
  • Solution development and delivery: providing customer-centric solutions with respect to web services, including assisting with configuration, design, and testing; designing, building, developing and maintaining content and applications that support all areas of the university using object-oriented programming in a web-platform language, client-side languages (e.g. JavaScript/jQuery, XML, CSS), and server-side languages (e.g. PHP, Ruby, Ruby on Rails, Grails, Java); creating interactions and interoperability between disparate web applications via JSON and APIs; creating prototypes and functional specifications for software projects; collaborating with customers, technical staff, programmers, DBAs, system managers, and management to develop estimates, obtain buy-in for solution designs, and execute implementation plans; developing and maintaining software requirements specification and architecture (design) documents; generating convincing and substantiated business, technology, and architecture recommendations; providing mobile application development and administration.
  • Support and application administration: providing high-quality functional and technical support for areas, processes and technologies as assigned; serving as a member of cross-functional teams to explore and improve upon existing systems, websites, and technologies; reviewing utilization of web technologies, such as browsers, languages, and plug-ins, and provide recommendations based on departmental needs and best practices; making suggestions for creating technical standards for specific websites; providing support for installation, configuration, administration/maintenance, integration, and troubleshooting of web application and content management systems, including diagnosis, solution buy-in and adoption, process improvement, and coordination between responsible areas; assisting Systems Administrators in performing maintenance as required.

    QUALIFICATIONS:
    Bachelor's degree required or combination of education and field/related experience. Must have a minimum of 3 years of related experience in web solutions and technologies. Must have knowledge of XML, XSL, HTML/HTML5, or CSS/CCS3; knowledge of web programming and scripting languages (ie. Javascript, Python, PHP, Apache, Perl, etc.). Knowledge of content management systems (CMS) including Drupal, OU Campus and WordPress is preferred. Knowledge of mobile app development, APIs, and version control systems is preferred. Knowledge of client and server sides of web applications is preferred. Familiarity with a web application framework (e.g. Bootstrap, jQuery, Ruby on Rails) preferred. Proficiency in using graphic design tools, front-end and back-end web development preferred. Experience with installing, upgrading, and maintaining third party applications preferred. Development experience with PHP and/or Java is preferred. Development experience with HTML/HTML5 and CSS/CSS3 preferred. Must have effective skills in research and analysis, project planning and implementation; strong interpersonal communication skills and the ability to maintain effective working relationships with clients, co-workers, and vendors; excellent decision-making, time-management, and planning skills; customer-centric approach to problem-solving. Must have the ability to be an enthusiastic and resourceful team member; ability to be a self-starter and motivated to move projects forward; ability to manage competing priorities in a highly demanding environment. Occasional weekends and evenings are required.
