Turbomachinery Technician
The University of Notre Dame (ND.jobs) is accepting applications for a Turbomachinery Technician.

This position will support the research efforts of the ND Turbomachinery Laboratory. The technician will share responsibility for maintenance and operation of multiple high-speed turbomachinery rigs under the direction of the turbomachinery research group faculty and supervisory staff members. Responsibilities will include a diverse set of tasks in support of experimental research.
Tasks may include: Assembly of complex, high-tolerance, high-power, custom-built rotating machinery. Assembly of ducts and valves. Repair and maintenance of equipment including gearboxes, pumps, and electric motors. Assembly of high-speed couplings, alignment of high-speed rotating equipment. Troubleshooting basic machinery/equipment problems. Installing precision instrumentation including pressure transducers, thermocouples, and precision electronics. Verifying the correct operation of sensors and actuators necessary for each experiment. Troubleshoot and solve basic instrumentation problems. Building and maintaining instrumentation such as miniature probe rakes. Working with faculty, staff, and students to design small parts for research and maintenance activities. Using machine shop to manufacture and repair small parts. Ensuring the cleanliness and organization of the turbomachinery facilities. Cleaning oil spills, sweeping debris, keeping track of and organizing tools and equipment. Reporting low supply of quantities, damaged equipment etc. to supervisor.
The Technician is an entry level position at the ND Turbomachinery Laboratory. The Technician will have the following skills after 12-18 months:
- Accurate use and reading of calipers, micrometers, dial indicators and other precision measuring tools
- Safe usage of facility equipment such as: overhead cranes, oxy-acetlyne torches, hydraulic rams, welders, fork trucks, etc.
- Accurate usage and performance of facility start-up checklists and communications protocols (i.e. maintenance logs).
- Proper basic wiring skills (PLC cabinets, instrumentation, etc).
- Basic instrumentation testing and verification.
- Proper organization and tidiness of lab spaces.
Minimum Qualifications:
The successful candidate will need the ability to multi-task and interact successfully with individuals with varying levels of experience while working closely with faculty, staff and students.
Must be able to organize and prioritize work and meet critical deadlines. Candidate must have the ability to work independently as well as with others.
Must be able to bend, squat, crawl, climb, and lift up to 50 pounds to perform some of the work.
Basic computer skills, including email, internet, and spreadsheets, are required. Understanding of technical drawings, dimensioning, and tolerances are required. Must be able to use precision measurement tools such as calipers, micrometers, feeler gauges, and dial indicators. Must be able to use essential machine shop tools such as drill presses, lathes, mills, and hand tools. Basic understanding of electronics and mechanics is essential.
Candidates must be able/eligible to work on export controlled research.
Candidates Must be able to work hours outside of normal first shift on occasion as needed
