TRIO Upward Bound Academic Specialist (CVP)

Basic Function:
Under the general direction of the Project Coordinator for Centinela Valley Project (CVP) Upward Bound Program , the Academic Specialist will follow the philosophy, goals and objectives of the TRIO UB CVP. The Specialist will assist in developing, implementing and coordinating the Program's services; act as a liaison with high school administration, staff, and community relative to the Programs' services; and act as conduit between the Project Coordinator and summer residential staff.

Representative Duties:
Adhere to high school district policies and guidelines E

Supervise, develop and implement tutor training workshops for tutoring staff E

Conduct academic advising, tracking and counseling through the maintenance of program participant files and databases which will assist the Project Coordinator in improving program design E

Assist with academic curriculum for summer residential Program and Saturday sessions during the academic year. E

Nurture contact with community groups and agencies, local schools, and their district offices by working closely with teachers, counselors, and administrators E

Write and submit all reports on a timely basis E

Serve on CLU committees as assigned E

Interpret diagnostic tests and other measuring instruments to assist the Senior Director and Project Coordinator with the completion of the Annual Performance Report E

Share in the planning, development, implementation, and monitoring of program objectives and activities E

Present program orientation sessions for participants and parents E

Assess academic needs through school visitations and develop individual educational plans for all participants especially with regard to Post secondary admission and financial aid processes E

Participate in conferences and in-service workshops E

Maintain tracking system and program database for all participants as they enter and continue in their postsecondary education E

Support Senior Director and Project Coordinator with the hire of UB residential staff members for summer component E

Implement training sessions and support Project Coordinator with evaluations for residential staff E

Ensure that all residential staff receive certified tutor training E
Perform other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:
Any combination equivalent to: A Bachelors degree from an accredited college or university in a related field and one year experience in program administration working with low-income, first generation students.

Preferred Qualifications:
Masters Degree in education/social science or related degree
Budgeting experience
Experience working with students from a diverse background

Physical Abilities:
Seeing to read and review written correspondence; hearing and speaking to exchange information in person and on the telephone; dexterity of hands and fingers to take and transcribe dictation and operate a computer keyboard and other office equipment; sitting or standing for extended periods of time; pushing, pulling or lifting light objects; reaching to retrieve and file records.

Working Environment:
Office environment; constant interruptions; evening or variable hours.
