Job Summary

The University of Michigan-Dearborn Information Technology Services (ITS) has an exciting opportunity to employ a Systems Administrator Intermediate to support IT for the Dearborn campus. As a member of the Infrastructure team, the selected candidate will work primarily on Windows, VMWare, and Storage administration. This role will also work on automation and monitoring. This role requires a positive attitude, a drive to focus and produce results, and the ability to work independently to provide excellent customer service and effectively manage customer relationships in a constantly changing and evolving environment. This position will report to the Infrastructure Manager.

Responsibilities*

PRODUCTION SUPPORT (65%)

Provides effective production support for operational activities to ensure highly available, customer focused services including but not limited to:

  • Install, patch, configure, customize, troubleshoot, upgrade, integrate, and maintain Windows and virtual systems in accordance with established IT policies and procedures.

  • Monitor, tune, configure, troubleshoot, upgrade, and maintain storage systems.

  • Ensure data/media recoverability by maintaining a schedule of system backups and database archive operations and ensuring all systems are backed up according to specified policy.

  • Write, maintain, patch applications/code base used to support automation and service delivery.

  • Install, configure, and support monitoring solution for server infrastructure. Ensure all systems are being monitored in a tiered solution per business requirements.

  • Conduct routine hardware and software audits of servers to ensure compliance with established standards, policies, and configuration guidelines.

  • Demonstrate relationship-building and effective communication skills through active listening, sharing ideas and frequent communication with co-workers, vendors and other technical staff members resulting in recommendations and development of administration best practices and procedures shared and used by team members.

  • Utilize analytical and communication skills in the development and modification of written procedures, processes and technical support knowledge base, resulting in content tailored to the level and type of audience for support and issue resolution.

  • May require on-call availability and may require working during non-business hours and on weekends.

  • Escalate/collaborate with more senior staff as necessary

SERVICE IMPROVEMENTS (25%)

Lead small to medium service improvements by evaluating, researching, planning and implementation/updates of new or existing technologies and processes to systems administration and services which may include but are not limited to the following:

  • Identify gaps in established procedures/processes and make recommendations for implementing improvements.

  • Review technical designs/architecture across platforms comparing them to vendor/industry roadmaps/trends to identify strengths, weaknesses, and opportunities to redesign, update or improve Services/technical designs/architecture.

  • Identify areas of service improvements and potential future enhancements based on customer requests and feedback.



PROJECT MANAGEMENT (5%)

Lead small to medium projects to ensure effective communication and collaboration across the organization while delivering successful completion of projects on time/budget. Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Prioritize and manage the execution of the resources to the project.

  • Develop implementation plans and timelines of projects, provide status reports, exchange relevant information with management and project teams, and meet timelines.

  • Provide accurate time estimates for tasks, identify the teams involved, and notify management of potential risks and issues.

DEVELOPMENT OF SELF AND OTHERS (5%)

Stay current with relevant advances in technologies. Responsible for maintaining and updating knowledge of IT policies and procedures, hardware, software, and technical services. This can include: on-the-job training, attending technical courses or conferences, reading, research, and testing. Develop and follow best practices and procedures and share knowledge with team members.

  • Demonstrate skill development by actively participating in growth opportunities for continuous development and improvement and applying new skills/knowledge to the job as evident by the ability to efficiently and effectively perform assigned duties, resulting in meeting or exceeding customer expectations and performance metrics.

  • Demonstrate effective communication skills when providing training and mentoring to less experienced staff, resulting in staff and teams using and implementing the latest policies, procedures, and best practices to accomplish tasks.


Required Qualifications*
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education, certification, and experience.

  • Minimum of two years experience in IT working independently to successfully install, configure, maintain, and support applications and or operating systems

  • Minimum of one years experience with programming languages, scripting languages or automation platforms

  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot difficult issues, and problem solving skills with a focus on process improvement and/or automation.

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in technical concepts both verbally and in writing to teams and customers


Desired Qualifications*
  • MCITP, MSCE, MSCA or equivalent Microsoft certifications

  • 3-5 years supporting Microsoft Windows

  • 1-2 years supporting storage systems

  • Experience with one of the following languages: PowerShell, VBScript, or Microsoft.NET

  • Experience with Microsoft SQL

  • ITIL Certification or working knowledge of concepts.
