Job Description

Senior Applications Developer - Java, JavaScript

The Applications Developer will develop, implement, and maintain mission-critical applications in a heterogeneous environment. This individual will participate in all phases of a project, including but not limited to requirements gathering, business process review, application design and integration, development, testing, documentation, training and implementation of new applications. This individual will serve as project lead for select application development projects and as a technical lead for software specific projects. Is responsible for maintaining and supporting both in-house and vendor developed applications, while providing excellent customer service, and training. This individual will mentor junior staff members on software application programming, analysis, and development.

The Applications Developer must adhere to a high standard in project management practices, process design, application development and integration, quality assurance, and systems management, in support of students, faculty, and staff. Ability to communicate effectively in writing and verbally is required. The candidate should have excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.

Skills:

  • Knowledge and experience of open source projects, technologies, and tools
  • Experience building loosely-coupled, service oriented distributed systems
  • Languages/Platforms/Frameworks: Java/JEE, Struts, MVC, JSP, Servlets, ORM (ibatis, hibernate), JUnit, log4j, Python, Angular
  • Cross-cutting standards: XML, HTML, JSON, web services (SOAP,REST), HTTP APIs
  • Web Development: AJAX, JavaScript, HTML, CSS
  • Middleware: Apache web server, Tomcat, familiarity with Nginx or node.js a plus
  • Database solutions: experience with relational databases, including Oracle and SQL Server
  • Testing: experience with continuous integration and writing unit tests
  • Object-oriented analysis and design: Model Driven Architecture, Design Patterns
  • Operating Systems: Unix (Linux), Windows
  • IDEs and Development Tools: Eclipse (and a host of plug-ins), Ant, Maven, git/github

    Title and salary commensurate with relevant experience based on the following titles and hiring ranges:

    Senior Applications Developer:
    Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology or relevant discipline. Minimum of five years of technical experience to include applications development and integration principles and concepts. Previous experience leading technical teams. Salary up to 110K

    Applications Developer:
    Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology or relevant discipline. Minimum of three years of programming experience and at least two years of data analysis, design and implementation experience to include working with user departments to define and assess business needs and programming requirements. Salary up to 90K.

    Associate Applications Developer:

    Associate degree in Computer Science or Information Technology. Minimum of one year of professional IT experience or 1-3 years as a non-exempt employee working in an IT environment. Salary up to 74K.



    Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience in Computer Science or related field
  • 3 - 5 years recent experience in java-centric software development
  • Excellent written/oral communication skills
  • Experience with code versioning, branching and release methodologies
  • Understanding of secure design and coding practices
  • Ability to assist in developing and implementing technical standards.
  • Ability to serve as SME on emerging technology standards, new software functionality and alternative software solutions
  • Ability to integrate a variety of vendor applications to deliver solutions specific to Boston College
  • Experience with implementing and customizing or extending vendor-provided solutions.
  • Ability to log support issues and work directly with 3rd parties on corrective actions.
  • Motivated, energetic self-starter comfortable in a team-oriented environment
  • Interest and aptitude to quickly learn and apply new technologies
  • Attention to detail and firm commitment to quality and customer service
  • Ability to independently organize and manage time effectively to meet the goals of software delivery; Manage multiple tasks; ability to independently meet deadlines and maintain a high level of productivity
  • Ability to mentor junior staff members on software application programming, analysis and development.
  • Ability to train and assign work to student employees.
