Pay Grade 38. The Research Associate I position provides the Interdisciplinary Geospatial Technology Lab (IGTL) Director with direct support for the management and completion of externally funded projects and campus geospatial technology learning initiatives. The Research Associate will serve as the primary GIS analyst for the Thrive Regional Partnership regional planning project at UTC. The Research Associate I assists the IGTL Director with maintenance of campus GIS infrastructure, consisting of GIS hardware and software management, database management, web mapping application development, and lab and teaching facility administration. The Research Associate assists with the coordination of resources, materials, and data for the implementation and instruction of geospatial technologies among campus academic programs. The Research Associate I works closely with external funding partners to manage geospatial projects objectives and student intern progress. The Research Associate I position serves as a supporting source of geospatial expertise for interdisciplinary research and continued integration of geospatial technologies into the UTC learning environment.

Responsibilities include:
  • Assisting the IGTL Director with maintenance and upkeep of geospatial infrastructure through the IGTL.
  • Providing GIS expertise for research conducted by campus academic departments and centers.
  • Actively participating in project management and decision making in reference to the infrastructure and available UTC GIS resources.
  • Coordinating and tracking geospatial resources among various departments and colleges.
  • Representing UTC geospatial research projects and GIS programs of study at regional & national meetings, conferences, and paper presentations.
  • Actively managing and participating in externally funded applied geospatial research.
  • Mentoring and advising student workers, designing and completing spatial analysis models, publishing and hosting data through web mapping services, creating custom web and mobile mapping applications, attending and presenting research at meetings and assisting the IGTL Director with public training and workshops.
  • Updating and maintaining open geospatial data for academic and research use.
  • Managing and maintaining GIS teaching and research labs and hardware.
  • Providing geospatial technology training for faculty and students.
  • Assisting the Director with outreach and partnership development.
  • Assisting the Director with grant writing and project development.
Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in geography or related discipline such as Geology, Environmental Sciences, Natural Resource Management or Remote Sensing with specialization in geographic information systems (GIS) required. A minimum of 2 years of professional or academic research experience equivalent to a GIS Technician, GIS Analyst, GIS Manager, research associate, or consultant is required. Experience with natural resource management, conservation and use of GIS in a nonprofit organization setting is preferred.

Strong verbal and written communication skills required for teaching, training, instruction, and project presentation. The ability to manage multiple project and delegate tasks is essential. Must maintain a keen understanding of concepts and applications of remote sensing and geographic information science. Must have the skill of negotiating data use terms and agreements. Must maintain mastery of ESRl's ArcGIS software ecosystem (ArcGIS Dekstop, ArcGIS Server, ArcGIS Online, ESRI mobile applications) and dominant open source GIS software packages. Excellent skills in database management (My SQL, Access, MS SQL, ArcSDE, Oracle, etc.) is needed. Understanding of programming with python or ESRl's model builder and basic understanding of development with javascript, java, or MS Silverlight APls for ArcGIS is required. Experience developing and hosting applications in ArcGIS Online applications is essential.
