Operations Assistant/Talk Show Producer/Student Liaison - Requisition # 190000000F

This position oversees the day-to-day operations of WUTC-FM, including coordination and administration of a range of operational and administrative activities in direct support of the delivery of 24-hour radio programming by WUTC. Additionally, the position leads and manages the planning, production and presentation of daily community/college program and news vignettes; and stimulates and manages student opportunities for WUTC programming.

Responsibilities include:
  • Overseeing and coordinating the continuous, multifaceted daily operations of the radio station, ensuring compliance with broadcast standards, university policies, and relevant federal and state laws and regulations.
  • Maintaining accurate schedules, records, discrepancy reports, and follow-through communications; and ensuring that all on-air broadcast programming complies with FCC rules and regulations.
  • Ensuring daily functioning of WUTC's 24-hour automated program delivery to prevent "dead air" or "audio collisions."
  • Being on call for any issues regarding computer automation or other programming issues.
  • Hosting and planning all aspects of the daily talk program, including scheduling, sourcing and confirming guests, staying up-to-date with current events to ensure that program content is interesting and well-researched.
  • Utilizing various broadcasting technologies such as soundboards and editing/production software to produce daily program.
  • Editing interviews, reports and conversation pieces for daily news, and evaluating written content for broadcast to identify any potential compliance issues with non-commercial guidelines of the FCC.
  • Meeting tight deadlines.
  • Assisting at WUTC's fund-raising events.
  • Supporting student opportunities by recruiting, mentoring, and managing student involvement, including news generation and MOCS Mix music at WUTC.
  • Training students to use various broadcasting technologies, such as audio editing software, soundboard, and portable recorders; and monitoring equipment usage and ensuring the maintenance of equipment inventories for students.
  • Screening all MOCS Mix music programming to ensure songs are FCC compliant.

    Qualifications:
    Bachelor's Degree is required; Master's Degree is preferred. Degree in Communication or Journalism is preferred.

    3 or more years of on-air experience in radio, radio automation, and writing news copy for radio hosting talk-based programming is required. 10 years of on-air radio experience, and radio automation; and 5 years of experience writing news copy for radio, and hosting talk-based radio programming is preferred.

    Candidates must have knowledge of public radio principles, procedures, operations, and standards. Knowledge of FCC and other federal, state and local broadcasting regulations is required. Must have strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community. Knowledge and understanding of radio communications facilities, distribution and automation systems is required. Must have ability to supervise and train students. Must have ability to create, compose, and edit written materials under time-constraints; and the ability to oversee, coordinate, and support the execution of continuous automated broadcast schedules on a 24x7 basis. Must have skill in operating radio equipment and related software. Must have skills in examining and developing station operations and procedures, formulating policy, and implementing organizational strategies and procedures. Skill in organizing resources and establishing priorities is required. Knowledge of ENCO automation system is preferred.
