POSITION PURPOSE:

As a financial aid advisor, the position is expected to provide in-depth counseling to students, parents, faculty and staff regarding the financial aid process. Duties include: review files; evaluate exceptional circumstances; use professional judgment; determine need/eligibility for aid; monitor satisfactory academic progress; verify and revise financial aid files; refer and interact with many offices on and off campus to assist students in resolving complex issues; provide financial aid advising during various campus outreach events, which may occur on weekends or evenings; participate on committees; attend professional conferences; and, perform other duties as assigned, which may include ad hoc projects.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Processing Duties
    • Complete Financial Aid Verification Review in Campus Logic
    • Complete weekly discrepancy queries
  2. Front Office Assistance
    • Assist students at the front counter and on phones. Provide guidance and assistance to student workers in the front office area
  3. Review and Approve Loss of Income and Cost of Attendance Appeals
    • Review all Loss of Income Appeals to determine if documentation warrants a change to a student's FAFSA which would positively effect aid eligibility
    • Review all Cost of Attendance appeals to determine if documentation warrants an increase to a student's Cost of Attendance which would allow them to receive a greater amount of financial aid
  4. Resolve Multiple Reporting Records (MRR)
    • Entails resolving federal award payments by multiple institutions for the same student for the same period of enrollment. Usually requires contacting other institutions and student to determine which school is eligible to process the award.
  5. Award Eligible Credential students Pell Grant
    • Entails pulling eligible students from a query and adding Pell grant awards to their financial aid package

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration, or job-related field and two (2) years of recent related experience. Specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the appropriate knowledge and abilities may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis. A master's degree in a job-related field may be substituted for one year of the professional experience.

  • Demonstrated ability to quickly develop comprehensive knowledge about CSUB and CSU/CSUB enrollment requirements, policies, and procedures, as well as general knowledge about financial aid processes and procedures.

  • Ability to use initiative and resourcefulness in planning work assignments and in implementing long-range program improvements.

  • Must be able to work occasional holidays and adjust working hours to meet special jobs. May be called back periodically to perform work as needed on an emergency basis.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Master's degree in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration, or job-related field.
  • At least one year of recent experience in a college or university student services area (preferably financial aid office).
  • Thorough working knowledge of federal, state and institutional financial aid programs, policies, procedures
  • PeopleSoft experience in a college or university financial aid office.
  • Demonstrated skills in an institutional/educational environment utilizing a customer-oriented and service-centered attitude.
  • Bi-lingual - English and Spanish language skills.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: SEDENTARY WORK – involves mainly sitting; minimal walking and standing; lifting light weight objects limited to 15 pounds.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS:
