Library Description

In January 2015, UTC opened a new, five-story 180,000 square foot library. The library staff comprises 22 librarians and 15 staff members, operates on an annual budget of just over 3 million dollars, and possesses collection holdings of more than 500,000 volumes, over 2,500 active journal subscriptions, 150 databases, and over 28,000 accessible online journals. The new library provides a large information commons with 175+ public computers, 38 group study rooms, a media studio, three library instruction classrooms, a writing center, a cafe and a 24-hour study space. The library delivers a comprehensive range of public services, including outreach, instruction and research assistance. UTC Library is well equipped to support the research and scholarship needs of the UTC community.

Department Description

The Research and Instruction department supports the teaching and research programs of the campus community, in cooperation with other faculty members who do instruction for the Library. The department consists of four other full-time tenured or tenure-track librarians who work with UTC faculty to design and develop lesson plans, curricula and teaching activities that support 21st century information needs and address research-related learning outcomes. The Instruction Program is well respected on campus and includes a long standing, embedded presence in the General Education Composition program as well as a wide array of discipline specific instructional offerings and topical workshops. In 2017-2018 the Research and Instruction department alone offered more than 350 instruction sessions and reached more than 5,000 students overall. Current projects include a subject guide overhaul and a strategic plan to embed research skills instruction in each department or program on campus.

Position Summary

Reporting to the Director of Library Instruction, this tenure-track Instruction Librarian position is responsible for instruction in all forums and formats.

Library instruction responsibilities include:
  • Collaborating with librarians and faculty to deliver innovative instruction.
  • Subject-specific library instruction for freshman and advanced level courses.
  • One-on-one instruction / research consultations with faculty, staff, and students.
  • Preparation of instructional materials and library research assignments.
  • Participation in the development and maintenance of website content, tutorials, games and other teaching materials relevant to instructional services.
  • Active participation in Information desk duty approximately 6-8 hours per week; some evening work is required.
  • Participation in the development and maintenance of subject guides and other instructional materials.
  • Liaison duties in specific subject areas, to be determined.
Library-wide and University responsibilities include:
  • Participate in providing library and outreach services to the university community.
  • Participate in library-wide planning and committee work.
  • Serve at an alternative public service desks a minimum of one to two hour per week.
  • Participate in UTC governance, planning, and service.
  • Conduct scholarship consistent with a tenure-track appointment.
Required Qualifications
  • Master's degree from an ALA-accredited program.
  • Experience providing reference services, preferably in an academic setting.
  • Understanding of current and emerging trends, concepts, and theories in library instruction and higher education
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills evidenced by the ability to work cooperatively and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues, faculty, staff and students.
  • Demonstrated learner-oriented approach to instruction and other library services.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and manage projects.
  • Ability and commitment to conduct independent scholarship consistent with a tenure-track faculty appointment.
  • Commitment to engage in continuing professional development.
UTC Librarians are expected to participate in library-wide and system-wide planning, University governance and service, and to be professionally active.

Desired Qualifications
  • Experience related to the assessment of instructional initiatives.
  • Experience related to instructional design, instructional technologies, educational technologies, or the equivalent.
  • Experience engaging and serving diverse user populations and information environments
Salary

Salary: minimum is $46,000, commensurate with experience.

Rank

This is a full-time, 12-month, tenure-track position with faculty status and academic rank. Appointment will be at the rank of Assistant or Associate professor.
