Job Summary:
Under the direction of the Telecom Manager, the Infrastructure Cable Engineer is responsible for the USF voice/data and cable TV infrastructure (copper, fiber, coax, and wireless connections) along with related IDF, PDU and UPS equipment. The individual in this hands-on role will collaborate with other departments within USF and engage outside vendors to provide support on large and small projects as well as respond to routine break/fix daily operations necessary to keep systems available for the Students, Faculty, and Staff at USF. The Infrastructure Cable Engineer is the owner and main point of contact for all issues related to voice/data cable TV infrastructure architecture, installation, repair and projects.

Ensure 24/7/365 uptime of USF voice/data/cable TV infrastructure.
Evaluate, manage, maintain and document infrastructure cabling in ~ 150 network closets.
Provide University-wide Level 2 technical support for Telecom services. Recommend to management when outside escalation is required & coordinate said Level 3 service visits with vendors.
Assist in maintenance and accuracy of database records for University Telecom and cabling infrastructure.
Direct consultants to ensure that voice/data/cable infrastructure provides sufficient reliability and capacity to deliver the desired level of business performance.
Coordinate third-party maintenance for infrastructure hardware, software and services.
Develop and cultivate strong relationships with stakeholders, peers, vendors & service providers.
Consult with other USF departments in order to understand and meet their requirements.
Vendor Management. Negotiation and contract management with consultants, technical personnel and vendors for services and products.
Formulate best operating practice ensuring inventory and documentation of infrastructure & related configurations are regularly updated.
Other Functions & Responsibilities:
Serve as backup for Senior Telecom Engineer to provide operational break/fix and maintenance support for requests, incidents and system changes. Including installation and troubleshooting of voice and cabling issues.
Work with Network, Security & Facilities Depts. to plan, coordinate, and implement security measures in order to protect critical infrastructure and entry points (physical & virtual) to USF voice/data/telco systems.
Ensure that ITS standards are implemented on all new installs and renovations.
Monitoring of all Infrastructure UPS & PDU equipment for alerts, outages and replacements.
Assist Network Engineers in troubleshooting & resolving LAN/WAN connectivity issues.
Ensure critical HW & SW is under maintenance contract/support.
Research & implementation of newer technologies and leverage of them for competitive advantage & reduced administrative overhead.
Ensure all USF cabling installations comply with Building Industry Consulting Service International (BICSI).

Minimum Requirements:
Education / Qualifications:
Bachelors degree in a subject area related to computer science or engineering field. Experience can substitute for field of study. (5 to 7 years experience in areas above if no Bachelors degree)
Must be able to work at heights, off a ladder and in confined spaces, lift up to 40 pounds and move up to 50 pounds.
Strongly prefer certifications including BICSI, RCDD, CTS or a security installers license.
Additional Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Experience / Skills:
3 to 5 years experience using digital multi-meters, and cable testers.
3 to 5 years experience punching down on both the 110 and 66 block as well as experience with terminating: Coax, RJ-45 and RJ-11.
Must be well versed in end to end labeling including MPOE and fiber.
Ability to read and understand schematic and line diagrams.
Fiber experience including Terminations, SC and LC Connectors.
Strong communication & organization skills.
Technically competent with various software programs, including but not limited to Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio), Plangrid and SmartSheet.
Strong hands-on technical background with at least four years in a 24/7/365 operational role.
Comprehensive understanding of industry cable test procedures and equipment for a variety of different cabling systems (Copper/Fiber test equipment, OTDR, Network analyzer, etc.).
Solid knowledge of standards, best practices and key performance metric reporting.
Occasional work in tight and/or narrow spaces, such as under raised floors.
