Job Description

The Executive Director, Advancement Engagement & Communications leads the teams responsible for the creation and implementation of communications, marketing, stewardship and event strategies that support the overall fundraising and engagement goals of University Advancement at Boston College. Reporting to the Associate Vice President, Operations & Planning, this is a senior position operating autonomously across the organization that demands strong and focused management capability as well as savvy and creative leadership skills.

Candidates should possess the following characteristics:

  • The ability to work collaboratively with leaders of the fundraising and alumni relations units to understand their goals and the ways in which the work of the external engagement units can be most supportive in helping them achieve their goals.
  • The ability to successfully lead three units (AC&M, P&E, Stew) that have previously been unaligned, determining opportunities for increased productivity and efficiency were possible and ensuring that they are united in support of University Advancement's annual goals.
  • A passion for the important role that marketing and branding plays in advancing a cause and in mobilizing constituents to invest in and make that cause a priority in their lives.
  • The ability to establish a clear strategic direction for advancement communications (including acknowledgements, impact reports, donor newsletter, web sites, etc.), ensuring the unit's work is focused and devoted to those tactics and initiatives that will have the greatest impact on the goals of University Advancement.
  • The vision to shape a strategy around donor and high end engagement events that deepen relationships with major donors and prospects.
  • The skills needed to work with and elicit data that informs decisions and leads to insights that advise the unit's strategic priorities.
  • The ability to differentiate between the important and the urgent, investing in best practice outcomes for the former while ensuring that the latter is managed in as efficient a manner as possible.
  • A collaborative spirit and mindset, working with colleagues in a manner that builds trust and inspires confidence both in the Executive Director and in the team that s/he leads.
  • Personal integrity, a passion for educational advancement and a genuine commitment to the work of Boston College, its students and faculty.

    Full-Time Equivalent Hiring Range: $141,250 to $176,550; salary commensurate with relevant experience.

    Requirements

    The position requires a Bachelor's degree, Master's degree preferred and a minimum of 10 years of demonstrated experience in communications, relationship marketing or donor relations within a high performance environment. The proven ability to lead and manage individuals and teams to drive performance and maintain a high level of motivation is key. Exceptional collaborative and interpersonal skills, demonstrated by strong working relationships with peers and senior leaders, as well as the ability to mentor junior staff are essential. Superb oral and written communication skills are required. Must be a team player who is highly motivated and dedicated to the goals of advancing higher education and have an appreciation for Jesuit Catholic education and the goals and values of Boston College.
