Multicultural Student Services is an integral part of the Student Engagement and Inclusion (SEI) division of Student Affairs. Reporting to the Executive Director of Student Engagement and Inclusion, the director will be a part of a team including Student Life and Leadership (Student Activities, Student Organizations, Student Governance, Student Media, and Leadership Development), Student Union Operations, Career Services, and New Student Orientation. The Director of Multicultural Student Services will serve as a leader on campus to ensure the success, engagement and retention of underrepresented and underserved students. The director will work with campus partners on the implementation of the UAA 2025 strategic plan that outlines the need to reduce equity gaps in student learning and achievement, as well as create a sense of belonging and community for marginalized groups. The director will work with departmental staff to provide a comprehensive program on campus for students who identify as underrepresented and/or underserved to create and provide opportunities to support academic success, student engagement, and persistence, as well as celebrate the life cycle of a student.



Duties / Responsibilities:



20% - Ensure the delivery of a comprehensive program within Multicultural Student Services that integrates the needs of the UAA's diverse student population. The director is responsible for providing leadership, administration, as well as creating a sense of belonging for underrepresented and underserved students, including, but not limited to: Black/African American, Latinx, Asian/Pacific Islander, International, Native American and LGBTQIA2S+ students.



10% - Develop, implement and assess the department's strategic plan, learning outcomes and annual goals to include student success, student belonging, recruitment, persistence and retention. Align departmental strategic plan with UAA 2025 and the Diversity Inclusion and Action Plan to create a culture of equity and inclusion by embracing diversity on campus. Assess and address the curricular and co-curricular needs of underrepresented and underserved student populations attending UAA.



15% - Support the development of diversity advancing strategies and tactics across departments to ensure meaningful progress is achieved at closing equity gaps. Create and maintain meaningful partnerships and collaborations across the division, as well as with other academic and administrative units and committees serving underrepresented and minority student populations on campus. Serve on university committees to establish and implement programs and services which enhance the retention and success of underrepresented and underserved students. Collaborate with the Chief Diversity Officer to embed diversity, equity, and inclusion into all programs and services.



15% - Serve as a leader on campus for multicultural education, including leading campus initiatives such as the cultural and heritage month celebrations, monthly programming and educational initiatives, supporting leadership development with multicultural and underrepresented student organizations. Serve as an advocate for students from underrepresented and underserved groups; leads community conversations about bias and community responses to bias as it relates to student concerns. Foster community building within and across underrepresented or underserved communities and help students connect to form social support networks.



20% - Hire, supervise, develop, evaluate, and retain professional staff within Multicultural Student Services. Provide leadership, vision, and support to the staff of Multicultural Student Services. This position is responsible for periodic evaluation of staff member's performance, providing professional development opportunities as well as ensuring that the staffing needs of the programs are met.



10% - Provide budget management for the department, conduct budget forecasts and projections. Facilitate resource allocations and secure external funding as needed. Work with the Fiscal Coordinator and departmental staff to ensure budget transparency and that all budgetary functions are handled efficiently, including soft ledgers, reconciliation processes, spending and management reports. Authorize expenditures and monitor and approve all requests for purchases and travel. Manage foundation accounts and oversee scholarship processes.



10% - Facilitate community outreach and collaboration with external constituencies to foster support, mentorship, and funding opportunities to expand educational opportunities for underrepresented and minority students on campus. Maintain a high level of visibility in the university and Anchorage communities by developing sustaining working relationships with Alaska school districts and various multicultural community groups.



Knowledge/Skills/Abilities



  • Extensive knowledge of the challenges facing students from various historically underrepresented, underserved and marginalized populations.

  • Demonstrated skill in helping others, especially students, validate their cultural strengths and identities.

  • Knowledge and skills in training others in cultural competence for working with diverse student populations.

  • Strong skills in organizational leadership, personnel management, staff supervision, decision making, budget management, and conflict management.

  • Ability to create supportive environments for all UAA students regardless of major or background.

  • Demonstrated ability and successful experience sustaining productive relationships with directors in the Student Affairs Division as well as members of the university's academic community.

  • Ability and commitment to supporting the engagement, development, and retention of underrepresented and underserved student populations.

  • Knowledge of effective strategies for improving student academic performance.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of diversity, inclusion, equity, access, and multiculturalism in higher education.

  • Experience working with diverse populations of students, parents/families/supporters, staff, and university community members to create inclusive environments as well as demonstrated ability to promote effective communication among diverse populations.

  • Knowledge of assessment in higher education. Specifically, demonstrated ability to use assessment to inform improvement and development of services and programs.

  • Ability to work effectively as a member of a team, build consensus among others, and lead organizational change initiatives.

  • Proven knowledge of best practices in management of sensitive student records.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.




Required Education or Training



A master's degree in higher education, student affairs, educational leadership, college student personnel, Indigenous or Multicultural Studies, Human Services, Public Administration, or related field is required.

Applicants must possess progressively responsible experience in directing, managing, and coordinating multicultural services in a higher education setting.

Minimum 5-7 years of experience working in roles with significant student contact supporting underrepresented/underserved students. Work experience must include comprehensive personnel management and supervision, strategic long-range planning and mission implementation, demonstrated sound judgement, discretion, awareness and experience advancing the interests and concerns of underrepresented and underserved populations.
