Job Description

Role Summary:
The Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Programs will lead the collaborative effort of the Law School community to provide a diverse, equitable and inclusive environment committed to the success of all of our students and a shared sense of belonging. This position will create programming and services that address diversity initiatives and topics affecting the Law School community. It will cultivate Law School community support, and work in close partnership with colleagues across student facing offices, the Director's work will help support the attraction, recruitment, retention, academic and professional development of underrepresented law school student populations including but not limited to students of color, first generation students, LGBTQIA+ students, veterans and international students. The Director will be the primary support for the related student organizations including its LAHANAS program. The Director will ensure diversity goals and initiatives are integrated in the law school community, including marketing efforts, policies and procedures, strategic objectives and other matters. In addition to the administrative responsibilities at the Law School articulated below, the Director will also serve as the primary liaison for the law school on all University-wide programs and strategic initiatives focused on Diversity, Inclusion and Equity. This includes working closely with the Office of Institutional Diversity and The Boston College Forum on Racial Justice in America. The Director will serve as a resource at the Law School for discussions on issues of racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, religious intolerance and discrimination.

Essential Functions:

Student Programming, Engagement & Advising
  • Meet individually and in groups with students on matters related to diversity, equity and inclusion.
  • Advise and support law school student affinity groups including the first generation student organization and the LAHANAS program
  • Provide student programming and training that fosters and supports a diverse, equitable and inclusive law school community. Collaborate and work with the team that develops and hosts new student Onboarding and Orientation
  • Collaborate with administrators and faculty to mobilize resources needed to assist students with personal and academic issues. Support Academic & Student Services as needed.

Admissions and Recruiting:
  • Support the Admission Office's recruitment of a diverse student body with a focus on the JD students.
  • Participate as a member of the Admissions Committee and provide strategic recommendations
  • Collaborate with the Assistant Dean of Graduate Enrollment to develop, oversee and measure the effectiveness of diversity outreach, pipeline and recruitment initiatives that will present stronger, more diverse pools of applicants, admitted and enrolled students
  • Assist with efforts to increase diverse student funding by supporting University Advancement, Admissions other related efforts for internal scholarship generation
  • Provide advising and other resources for incoming and current students seeking external diversity scholarships. Help facilitate opportunities and partnerships for expanding diverse student scholarship support
  • Professional Opportunities and Development
  • Work in close coordination with the Assistant Dean of Career Services, the Director of Recruitment and
  • Employer Outreach to develop and enhance relationships with potential employers and local bar associations to enhance professional development and placement opportunities for diverse students; help address issues specific to underrepresented law students to ensure an equitable job placement experience and help provide career programs on DEI topics generally such as cultural competence
  • Collaborate with University Advancement as appropriate on institutional relationships, program sponsorships and other funding opportunities
  • Work jointly with Career Services in providing resources for students regarding diversity career fairs and other programs, fellowships, affinity bar membership programs, and substantive topics and trainings

Administrative Responsibilities
  • Serve on law school committees and working groups focused on diversity, equity and inclusion as requested by the Dean of the Law School. Conduct climate and other related surveys. Support related initiatives.
  • Provide internal and external tracking, analysis and reporting of diversity data
    Serve as the law school's primary liaison to the Office for Institutional Diversity on University-wide initiatives and programs. Collaborate and assist in delivering related programs and training to law school faculty and staff. Represent the Law School on the University's Diversity & Inclusion Committee
  • Partner with the Associate Dean of Finance & Administration and the Asst. Dean of Academic & Student Services to manage and enhance the law school's diversity and inclusion budget
  • Ensure diversity goals and initiatives are integrated in the law school community, including marketing efforts, policies and procedures, strategic objectives and other matters
  • Identifying external grants and other external funding that would support DEI initiatives at the Law School and work with Advancement and the Associate Dean of Finance to apply.

Some travel may be required. Some weekends and evenings as necessary.

Full-Time Equivalent Hiring Range: $80,050 to $100,050; salary commensurate with relevant experience.

Requirements

  • J.D. degree from ABA accredited law school, preferred
  • 5-10 years of diversity, equity and inclusion or other related full-time work experience
  • Experience and strong interest in and capacity for working with students
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with colleagues. Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated problem solving, critical analysis, initiative, judgment and decision-making skills
  • Demonstrated ability to design, develop and implement policies and trainings to cultivate a inclusive law school community
  • Strong project management, organizational and administrative skills including the ability to work independently and with a variety of constituents, establish and manage shifting priorities, and handle numerous time-sensitive projects with multiple deadlines and stakeholders
  • Prior professional interactions with racial, ethnic, religious, sexual identity, gender identity, geographical and socioeconomic status diversity
  • Prior experience envisioning, developing and providing student or employee programming, support and resources focused on diversity, equity and inclusion
